Preet Chandi is a British-born Sikh army officer who became the first woman of colour to complete a solo expedition to reach the South Pole on 3 January 2022.
Army career
[edit]Chandi, who holds the rank of captain, currently serves as a Clinical Training Officer in the British Army with 3 Medical Regiment. She was commissioned into the Army Reserves in 2012 and joined the Regular Army in 2016.
South Pole expedition
[edit]Chandi set out on her solo expedition on 1 November 2021, departing from Antarctica's Hercules Inlet. The journal to the South Pole involved travelling a distance of 700 miles, pulling a sled weighing 90kg, carrying 48 days' worth of food and supplies. Chandi is not the first woman to successfully complete a solo expedition to the South Pole, with the journey first being undertaken by Norway's Liv Arnesen, Chandi is the first woman of colour to do so.
She documented her journey via her blog, Polar Preet, and her Instagram page of the same name. Each day's post was dedicated to those individuals who helped and supported her on her journey, beginning with her late grandfather.
