Emmett Patrick Green (1867-1937)

[edit]

Emmett Patrick Green was a prominent businessman and politician in Manatee County, Florida. Green was born on January 25, 1867 in Marietta, Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1893 and dabbled in politics and real estate there in the early 1900s.[1] [2]After wintering in Tampa, Florida, he moved his family to Manatee County in 1910, attracted by the state's possibilities. He soon joined Albert F. Wyman to form a real estate firm, which still operates today as Wyman, Green and Blalock, and is the oldest continuously operating real estate firm in Manatee County as of 2021. [3]

Green served on the city council in the 1910s and as mayor of Bradenton from 1922-23.[4] He served on the state road commission during the tenure of Florida Governor John W. Martin and was instrumental in the construction of a concrete bridge over the Manatee River that connected Bradenton and Palmetto.[5] [6] The bridge opened on June 30, 1927 and was dedicated and named for Green in appreciation for his endeavors.[7] As a state road commission official, he was involved with the construction of the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41 today) connecting Tampa and Miami.[8][9] Green served on many boards of organizations, such as the Manatee County Fair Association of which he was one its founding members. He died on January 26, 1937 and was buried in Manatee Memorial Park in Bradenton, Florida. [10]
