First Part I am working on (SECOND SECTION FOR ACTUAL ARTICLE LINK, ALL MY WORK IS THERE)
[edit]A deal was approved on September 20th, 2024 between Microsoft and Constellation energy to re open the nuclear powerplant dubbed three mile island. Microsoft has stated they intend to use the power to power its usage of Open AI's services within its systems. The EPA is reporting pertinent regulatory filings have not been filed nor has there been an effort to report them. Open AI and Microsoft are also simultaenously funding HR 6936. This is the Federal Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Act. In this bill, there is a section that takes power away from the EPA in regards to energy regulation and gives said regulatory power to an individual within the cabinet. Most importantly to note, an appointed official. This runs the risk of massive corruption being possible depending on how much a company were to donate to a presidential campaign. (This entire thing needs to be condensed I know).
The more and more Research I do, I believe I probably should have switched my article to the AI controversies article previously. This is definitely pertinent to AI and OpenAI specifically, but I feel it would be taken off the wiki page for being to broad (this would be a a much better piece for independent journalism). Microsoft has a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI and are entitled to 49% of profits the company sees. Microsoft has done the majority of the heavy lifting with lobbying by donating to superpac's looking to deregulate environmental centers (opensecrets). Total political donations/spending in 2024 between the 2 companies total $15.3 million with most of the money aimed at legilsation to deregulate AI industries, including environmental oversight on the industry. If I do switch, the premise is the same that I would be creating a whole new portion to the existing article as there is nothing discussing this yet.

Nuclear
[edit]A deal was approved on September 20th, 2024 between Microsoft and Constellation energy to re open the nuclear powerplant dubbed three mile island. Bill Gates has stated Microsoft intends to use the power to power its usage of Open AI's services within its systems as well as peoples homes. [1]
Key regulatory permits for the plant's new life, however, haven't been filed, regulators say. [1] If the deal goes through, Three Mile Island would provide Microsoft with the energy equivalent it takes to power 800,000 homes, or 835 megawatts. This would be the first time a decommissioned plant would be re-opened and the first time a commercial plant provided to a singular customer. [2]
The Environmental Impact of Training Chat GPT
[edit]The main cause of concern when looking at the negative of AI as a whole are the environmental impacts of the data centers required to operate and train these models. Data centers are facilities that house power-hungry servers required by AI models, and they consume a considerable amount of energy while generating a substantial carbon footprint. [3] Besides the carbon footprint, the data centers have negative effects on environments from producing electronic waste like mercury or lead as well as they use high amounts of water. Freshwater is used during construction and after the facility is operational when its used as a coolant to reduce heat. [4]
According to a study done by researchers at University of California-Riverside, researchers found Microsoft and Open AI used 700,000 liters of freshwater in its training of GPT-3 in its data centers. For a conversation of 20-50 questions, the study estimates it would use the equivalent amount of freshwater as a 500 ml bottle which makes the total water footprint massive. [3] As of December 9th 2024, Chat GPT sees on average 300 million active users per week. [5]
