Barry is a software project to bring full BlackBerry syncing to Unix-like operating systems such as GNU/Linux and Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD). It may be the only major effort to do so by the open source community.[1]
Because the BlackBerry protocol is proprietary, documentation had to be created via reverse-engineering efforts.[2]
As of December 2012[update], the project includes many command-line utilities to charge and explore the device. Much of the syncing functionality is provided via an OpenSync plugin. The project has existed since 2006. Official releases are hosted on SourceForge.net. Many popular GNU/Linux distributions such as Ubuntu include Barry packages in official software repositories.[3]
