Andranik's Special Striking Division was established in 1918 after his departure from Armenia, in response to the need for a highly trained and efficient combat unit, that would follow his orders. Led by General Andranik Ozanian, the division was known for its defense of many important regions and cities, namely Zangezur, Karabakh, and the Nakhijevan, while cooperating with the civilians, who waged civil defense.
