Joanne Goh
[edit]Joanne Goh (born October 1, 1975) is a Malaysian film producer, business executive, and veteran of the East Asian entertainment industry. She is the founder of Jazzy Group of Companies (est. 1997), which specializes in organizing massive live concerts by international superstars, Jazzy Pictures (est. 2017), a film and TV production company based in Malaysia, as well as, the Malaysia International Film Festival and Malaysia Golden Global Awards (est. 2016). Goh has over two decades of experience working in the Malaysian and Hong Kong entertainment industry and is “credited with boosting many artists from Asia on to the global stage.”[1]
In 2019, her film ‘Nina Wu’, where she served as the executive producer, held its first screening at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. Her other films have also gone on to win awards and screened at world-class film festivals.
Career

[edit]In 2017, Goh founded Jazzy Pictures (M) Sdn Bhd, a film production and distribution company, with a mission to produce high-quality films that would help to alleviate Malaysian films to the international market.
In 2018, along with Pixel Play Entertainment, Goh co-produced ‘Crossroads: One Two Jaga’, which went on to win Best Film in the 30th Malaysia Film Festival and other local awards.[2] The film’s success paved the way for “a new direction for an industry that comes under close government scrutiny when it comes to subject matter, with its themes of corruption and crime.”[3] In the same year, Goh produced Fly By Night, which premiered in the 23rd Busan International Film Festival.[4]
In 2019, Goh produced Nina Wu, a film that was a response to and a reflection of the #MeToo movement. Directed by Taiwanese director Midi Z, the film was selected to compete in the 72nd Cannes Un Certain Regard Category.[5]
Goh’s upcoming projects include ‘The Lies I Tell’, ‘Reborn’ and’ Calling From Dark Side.’[6]
MIFFest & MGGA
[edit]Established in 2016, The Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) and Malaysia Global Golden Awards (MGGA) aim to showcase carefully curated films from all over the world, and to recognize a collection of distinguished works selected by a panel of acclaimed judges who are veterans of the film industry.[7]In an interview with New Straits Times, Goh highlighted that “the purpose of both events is to build a communication platform for global filmmakers and to promote the Malaysian film industry, as well as its arts and culture to the world.” [8] Humanity has been the running theme of both MIFFest and MGGA as these events aim “to recognise human excellence through films that inspire and enlighten the human spirit.” Through MiFFest and MGGA, Goh also hopes to promote the Malaysian tourism and arts industries. The festival is supported by the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), Tourism Malaysia and several local film associations. [9]
Malaysian singer-actress Lee Sin-jie has been the festival ambassador since the launching of the festival.[10] Some of the acclaimed film veterans who participated in the inaugural MIFFest include Wen Tien Hsiang [11], organizer of the long-running Golden Horse festival, Paolo Bertolin, who has advised a number of festivals including the Rome and Venice festivals, and Malaysian director Ho Yuhang. The jury president for the inaugural festival is Kim Dong-ho, South Korean filmmaker and co-founder of Busan International Film Festival.[12]
Filipino director Brillante Mendoza served as the jury president in the second edition of MIFFest,[13] while Indian director Rajkumar Hirani was the jury president for the third edition of the festival.[14]
