Hello, and welcome to the Sports Cleanup Contest! This is a two-month backlog drive from June to July 2025 dedicated towards the improvement of poor-quality sports biography articles. The main tasks are expanding stub-class biographical articles and providing significant coverage[a] for the notable topics. Barnstars and other awards will be given out.

The judges will be BeanieFan11 (talk · contribs · email) and [name]. Feel free to reach out to them or on the talk page if you have any questions.

The judges of the contest will hand out awards following the end of the drive to participants who earned points. The following will be the awards, and their requirements:
General

At least 1 point: WikiCookie

At least 5 points: Invisible Barnstar

At least 10 points: The Minor Barnstar

At least 15 points: The Modest Barnstar

At least 25 points: The Original Barnstar

At least 50 points The Editor's Barnstar

At least 75 points: The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar

At least 100 points: The Tireless Contributor Barnstar

At least 150 points: All-Around Amazing Barnstar

At least 200 points: The Order of the Superior Scribe of Wikipedia

Third place will receive the Bronze Barnstar.

Second place will receive the Silver Barnstar.

Additionally, the participant who accumulates the most points in the competition will be given the Golden Wiki Award!
Category-specific

At least 50 points in the category of BLPs: The BLP Barnstar

At least 50 points in the category of referencing[h]: The Citation Barnstar

At least 50 points in the category of stub expansion: The Stub Barnstar

The participant with the most sports covered will receive The Sports Barnstar

  • Additionally, for every sport that receives at least 25 submissions in total, the participant with the most qualifying articles for that sport will receive a themed barnstar.

Scoring system

  • The primary goal of this drive is to improve existing poor-quality sports biography articles. To qualify for points, the article should, prior to improvement, be either in a stub state[i] or have no significant coverage included.

Base points

  • For every sports article having a WP:SIGCOV source added, thus satisfying WP:SPORTCRIT, one (1) point is awarded.[j]
    • If two WP:SIGCOV sources are added, thus satisfying WP:GNG, two (2) points are awarded.
  • Eight (8) points are awarded for every article expanded significantly.
    • To determine what a "significant" expansion counts as, we will use the WP:DYK criterion of 1,500 bytes of readable prose; for articles that begin with over 300 bytes of prose, the requirement will be a five-fold expansion of readable prose.

Bonus points

  • Articles which were previously unreferenced will receive two times as many base points.
  • If the article is a biography of a living person (BLP), it will receive 1.5 times as many base points, and if the BLP was previously unreferenced, it will receive four times as many base points.
  • If the article was created by Lugnuts, it will receive two times as many base points.
    • If the article was one of Lugnuts' draftified creations, it will be worth four times as many base points.
  • Articles created between 2015 and 2020 will receive one (1) bonus point, while those created before 2015 will receive two (2).

Scoring example

Each user will have a submissions page – the user should list qualifying articles in either the "referencing" section (for adding significant coverage) or the "expansion" category. Articles can count for both. Along with the article name, the user should list the sport,[k] if it was created by Lugnuts, and whether it is a BLP[l] and/or unreferenced, as shown below[m]

  1. ^ Due to WP:NSPORT's requirement at WP:SPORTCRIT to provide significant coverage for all sports biography articles.
  2. ^ Lugnuts was known for creating enormous quantities of short stubs on athletes and was ultimately site-banned for a number of reasons. His articles have been the target of WP:LUGSTUBS and WP:LUGSTUBS2 proposals for mass draftifications. There are bonus points and an emphasis placed on Lugnuts-created articles as they could be targeted in similar RFCs.
