The Engineering Research Building (abbreviated ERB) is an academic building located on the University of Texas at Arlington campus. The building houses classrooms, faculty offices, research labs, as well as the Bioengineering and Computer Science & Engineering departments.
Establishment
[edit]The opening of the Engineering Research Building, the expansion of an added third floor to the adjacent Engineering Lab Building, along with Nedderman Hall have created wha is referred to as the 'Engineering Research Complex' or 'Engineering Quadrangle' that aims to expand research space, recruit high-profile faculty, and garner increased interest in the College of Engineering.[5][6]
Since the Building's opening, UTA has since been named a Tier One research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education for its research prominence, receiving this distinction in February 2016.[7][8]
Occupancy
[edit]The Computer Science & Engineering Department is located on the sixth floor of the building, and the Bio-engineering Department is housed primarily on the second floor. Both departments have access to classrooms, labs, offices and conference rooms.[3]
Eighteen research labs located on the east wing are shared by the Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry departments. In addition, there are various offices for faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and teaching assistants, as well as two study areas with cubicles for students.[3]
Environmental sustainability
[edit]The Engineering Research Building is awarded and certified as a LEED Gold structure by the U.S. Green Building Council.[9]
Key savings the building achieved to earn Gold certification included diverting 4,597 tons, or almost 82 percent, of on-site generated construction waste from landfills, utilization of building materials that were manufactured using recycled materials, decreased energy costs through the use of features such as occupancy sensors, reduced exterior lighting power and shading devices, and water usage cut almost in half through the installation of low-flow water fixtures.[10] Also incorporated are light-reflecting roofs, abundant natural light, and zero-scape vegetation around the grounds of the building which requires little water and maintenance.[4] There is also a system of water capture tanks buried in the ground to catch water from precipitation or HVAC condensation from the building system which can be used to irrigate the lawns and plant materials.[11]
Research laboratories
[edit]Among the collaborative labs inside the Engineering Research Building are:
- The Regenerative Neurobiology Lab- Bio-engineering researchers are attempting to build a better system of connecting live neurons with electrodes with the goal of giving amputees more realistic control over prostheses and even restoring their sense of touch.
- Optogenetics Lab- Bio-engineering and physics researchers are using optical tweezers to trap and manipulate nanoparticles and to determine how they interact with cells which will work to improve drug deliver systems in the treatment of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
- Biomedical Optics Lab- Bioengineers who specialize in minimally invasive tissue imaging are partnering with social work faculty to study and improve the cognitive functions of veterans dealing with posttraumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
- The Heracleia Human-Centered Computing Lab- Computer science engineers are using motion sensors, video cameras, facial recognition technology and algorithms to monitor and predict erratic behavior.
