was a publicly traded company until taken private by Silver Lake Partners and Texas Pacific Group in March 2007. Travelocity is based in Southlake, Texas, with additional offices in New York City, San Francisco, San Antonio and abroad.
History
[edit]JTB Corporation got its start in 1912 as Japan Tourist Bureau, an organization founded in cooperation between the government and the private sector to both promote and facilitate travelers from overseas. Almost a century later, the international travel division of JTB was spun off as its own company, JTB Global Marketing & Travel (JTBGMT). Sunrise Tours started in 1964 to provide package tours for non-Japanese visitors. JTBGMT also helped to organize large international events such as the Tokyo Olympic Games (1964), the Nagano Winter Olympic Games (1998), and the Japan-Korea World Cup (2002).[2]
The JAPANiCAN brand, and its corresponding website, launched in April of 2007. It was specifically designed to increase focus on travelers from overseas. Initially, JAPANiCAN was division of the larger JTB Corporation. Several months later, in August of 2007, JAPANiCAN split with JTB, becoming an went public July 2009
