The Island Bay Marine Education Centre is a nonprofit organisation based in Wellington that provides marine life education.
Founding and purpose

The Marine Centre operates in Island Bay out of the former Island Bay Surf Club and an old bait house, the latter of which acts as an aquarium.
Aquarium
[edit]The Marine Centre began leasing a dilapidated bait house from Wellington City Council and renovated it into an aquarium to support their educational efforts. The bait house was originally constructed in 1950 due to complaints over the smell generated by a fishing bait box near the Island Bay Surf Club. The aquarium frequently features a range of marine life, including octopus. The aquarium also supports wildlife during rehabilitation before releasing them back into the ocean.
In 2025 the Wellington City Council announced that it is considering removing or repurposing the bait house due to concerns over coastal erosion and sea level rise hazards.
