Unexpected bilingualism, also known as spontaneous foreign language acquisition or unexpected non-interactive foreign language acquisition, is a phenomenon observed in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder wherein they spontaneously develop proficiency in a language that is not spoken around them.[1] [2] Persons with UB acquire foreign languages by exposure to screens through media like television or YouTube.[2] The phenomenon has seen an increase since the advent of the internet, due to the accessibility of screens.[3]
