Tech Elevator

[edit]

Tech Elevator is a 14-week coding bootcamp teaching students to become junior software developers. Founded in 2015 by Anthony Hughes, David Wintrich and Aaron Cornell [1], the program is delivered in-person by software developers with deep industry experience[2]. Tuition is $12,000 which includes the coding bootcamp, and the Pathway Program™[3], a career development track which focuses on career development and readiness.

Locations

[edit]

Current bootcamps are running in Cleveland, OH and Columbus, OH.

Curriculum

[edit]

Coding curriculum includes Java and .NET/c# tracks which continue to rank as the top programming languages used in the workforce[4]. The program includes 5 modules, followed by a 2-week capstone project during the last 2 weeks of the program. Modules include an introduction to programming in either Java or C#, serverside programming, database programming, client-side web programming, and web application security[5].

Considered the bootcamp for career changers [COURSE REPORT ARTICLE], Tech Elevator puts a large emphasis on career strategy and readiness through events during the 14 week program. A mentor network of over 50 coaches and presenters visit students on a weekly basis helping with elevator pitches, resume review, interview prep, LinkedIn profiles, career strategy, personal branding and more. Tech Elevator also provides career coaches to help guide students into the career path that fits them best.

Pathway session formats include: presentations, workshops, panel discussions, peer critiques, one-on-one meetings and video recordings.

Employer Matchmaking

[edit]
Employer Matchmaking at Tech Elevator
Hundreds of company interviews take place during employer matchmaking sessions.

All career readiness events and sessions lead students up to the employer matchmaking event in week 11 of the program. The matchmaking event resembles speed dating where each student meets with companies of their choice in timed, 30-minute sessions. On average, students meet with at least 12 companies in a 2-day span, totaling over 250 interviews being conducted at the Tech Elevator space. Many times students will move onto 2nd and 3rd round interviews following the matchmaking event and some receive job offers before graduating.

Students also get an opportunity to meet hiring companies before matchmaking at showcases where companies present their culture and career opportunities to students.

Hiring Network

[edit]

Tech Elevator's hiring network consists of over 80 companies looking to hire qualified junior developers upon graduation. Students get access to companies from day one and can use internal contacts to find the right job fit for them.

Community

Tribe Hackathon
At Tribe Hackathon, programmers work at Cleveland Indians Progressive Field to build applications that will enhance the baseball fan experience.

To foster community in the region, Tech Elevator runs a Meetup group called Learn to Code for members to join and become engaged. Regular programming events are posted allowing someone new to the field to network with like-minded individuals about careers in technology.

Tech Elevator also works closely with the community by partnering with and supporting local organizations and events. Partner organizations include Global Cleveland, GiveCamp, JumpStart, and Tech Up.

To build community within the program, students have 24/7 access to the classrooms and common areas, and participated in activities that range from daily games of ping pong to monthly happy hours around the city.

Tribe Hackathon

[edit]

The Cleveland Indians, Tech Elevator and Progressive Insurance run Tribe Hackathon[7], an annual hackathon using technology and baseball to enhance the fan experience. At Tribe Hackathon 2016, 150 programmers and community members participated in the weekend's activities at the Terrace Club[8] at Progressive Field, home to major league baseball team the Cleveland Indians.
