Ford Works Program
[edit]- Ford Motor Company created the FordWorks program in 2016 with the aim to bring people with disabilities back into the workforce. It was the first automotive program to focus on bringing people with autism in the workforce. They targeted people with autism but have expanded their criteria to people with other disabilities. Ford has partnered with Upbound to broaden their hiring under the FordWorks program.
Disability access
[edit]Ford has been creating disability-accessible vehicles since 2016. They offer conversions, adaptive equipment, and reimbursement. For adaptive equipment, they have,
- Bumper-mounted and roof-mounted carriers
- chain or pivot-style door openers
- manual and electronic hand controls
- platform and hoist lifts
- these lifts come with hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, gravity, and those that combine hydraulic and electrical.
- electric and manual parking brake
- power assist seats come out of the vehicle and your car seat becomes the lift.
- hand and knob steering controls
- wheelchair restraints.
Ford has introduced many adaptations and innovations for their tech that have made their vehicles more inclusive. They have added lane-keeping systems to their cruise control. They have adaptive cruise control which controls the distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you when using the Adaptive cruise control. They have Blue cruise which is partial self-driving meant to help the driver. The blue cruise system includes the Adaptive cruise control distance system as well as lane keeping. Ford released an ad on YouTube for their blue cruise in which a deaf family was able to communicate while on the road because of the blue cruise technology and being able to take a hand off the wheel to sign to the passengers without having to worry about the consequences of taking a hand off the wheel.
