I started my career as a research chemist and am a Life Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry; hence I am still bound by its code of ethics. I am an amateur violinist (but did some professional work in my youth). For most of my career I was a university administrator but trained as a composer after early retirement. As well as composing, I am interested in the musical heritage of Liverpool, my native city, and in promoting forgotten composers from the area.

My connection with the Rodewald Concert Society is as a long-standing Member (since about 1947) and as its honorary secretary from 2007 until 2018. I was also one of the volunteers who assisted the professional archivist with the initial cataloguing of the archives to make them available to the public. My editing of the article on the Society is based on this experience, not on original research.
