Duke of Connaught and Moyle & Duke of Clarence and Willington

[edit]The titles of Baron Viscount Earl Marquess or Duke of Connaught & Moyle (named after Province of Connaught, Ireland) were created several times in the peerage of Ireland before 1801. It was first created for Enguerrand VII de Coucy, son-in-law of Edward III of England|King Edward III, in the 14th century. Later, a Dukedom of Connaught & Moyle was created for Henry IV of England|King Henry IV's third son, John, Duke of Connaught|John, who later served as regent of France. It was created again in 1470 for George Nevill, Duke of Bedford|George Nevill, nephew of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick|Warwick the Kingmaker, and again in 1485 for Jasper Tudor, uncle of King Henry VII.
The Russell family currently holds the titles of Baron, Viscount, Earl, Marquess and Duke of Connaught & Moyle. John Russell, a close advisor of Henry V and Henry VI, was granted the title of Baron of Moyle in 1419, and his descendant William, 3rd Baron, was created Viscount & Earl of Moyle following exceptional services to the crown during the War of the Roses in 1462.
In 1585, again due to exceptional services to the crown, including issuing the crown with a long term loan in order to fund further expeditions and exploration of the New World. David, Earl of Moyle was created 1st Duke of Moyle in 1584 and later the following year, 1585 was elevated to the title Duke & Marquess of Connaught & Moyle, again as a mark of gratitude to the crown.
The subsidiary titles of the Duke of Connaught & Moyle, in the peerage of Ireland, are: Marquess of Connaught & Moyle (created 1585), Earl of Moyle (1462), Viscount Moyle (1462), Baron of Moyle 1419). The subsidiary titles of the Duke of Connaught & Moyle, in the peerage of England are: Baron Russell of Surrey 1590 and The Marquess of Faversham [1599] created in order that the Russell family be able to take a seat in the English House of Lords The courtesy title of the Duke of Connaught & Moyle's eldest son and heir is Marquess of Faversham.
The Russell family also hold the Duke of Clarence and Willington [1357]] currently in abeyance out of respect to the Royal Dukedom of Clarence, also in abeyance. The subsidiary titles of the Duke of Clarence and Willington are: Marquess of Willington 1352, Earl Broughton 1346, Viscount Mayfair 1342, Baron Russell of Hampshire [1328]]. The courtesy titles of the Duke of Clarence and Willington are generally given to the Dukes younger sons although the current Duke is free to disperse courtesy titles as he deems appropriate.
The two Dukedoms of the Russell family have currently been stripped from the present Duke 1969 for non payment of Death Duties.
The family seat is Ffollijon Park near Windsor, Berkshire.
