Surface Emitters LEDs are those whose active region
is perpendicular to the axis of fiber connected to it.
Surface Emitter LEDs are having wider Half Power Beam Width(HPBW)
and hence they lack directional property. HPBW of such LED is nearly
equal to 120 degrees. Its radiation distribution in space is Lambertian type.

Surface Emitter LEDs are those whose emitting surface(technically called as Active Region) is perpendicular to axis of fiber optic cable.
Hence they are like planar LEDs. They have Half Power Beam Width(HPBW)
of about 120 degrees. So they lack directional property. There radiation
distribution is Lambetian type.
