Louis Sterling (born July 23, 1997), is an British record producer and sound artist from Bath, Somerset.
Biography
[edit]Initially known for his work under his Auxx pseudonym[1], he has since been known for producing in multiple genres including Experimental music, Ambient and contemporary classical music, releasing two extended plays and two long plays since 2015 on URBNET Records[2][3]. His debut studio album, entitled Adisceda, was released on April 12, 2019 via. David August's record label 99Chants[4][1].
Career
[edit]In March 2015, Sterling released the album 'Harmonics Contrast' via. Canadian label URBNET, receiving airtime on Mary Anne Hobb's BBC 6 Music Recommends show weeks before the albums official release[5]. He would later receive airtime on BBC Music Introducing[6][7], with singles including 'Danse Macabre' and 'Spirit Image' making their way onto BBC Music, NTS Radio and Giles Petersons Worldwide FM[8][9].
In February 2018, Sterling's work caught the attention of critically-acclaimed artist David August through a demo submission[10]. Conceived during the mourning process for a close family member that passed away in 2016, Sterling stated that the project, Adisceda, was freely written as a 'continuous prayer of reminiscence'[1]; "Like a photograph, capturing a close memory as it gradually fades away, becoming pale, faint and less visible", even at times of desperately trying to recollect the close moments that once meant the world."[11] The album was later mastered by ambient specialist Rafael Anton Irisarri at Black Knoll Studios in New York City, before being distributed by Rough Trade [12]. The album received generally positive reviews from music critics, being defined as 'a modern-classical meets electronic marvel' by Headphone Commute contributing writer Mike Lazarev[13], and a 'spacious ambient album with granular detail' by the editorial team at Bandcamp[14].
Live Performance
[edit]At the age of 21, he would continue to perform at events at in:motion Bristol[15], the BBC 6 Music Festival[16], and by November 2018, he would be invited by 99chants head David August to perform on his “D’Angelo” album tour in cities across the UK[17]. Sterlings live performances are mostly centred around the laptop and a MIDI controller, using different complex synth patches and routings through his computer, effect units and multichannel mixer.[18]
In June 2019, Sterling signed to artist management and booking agency platform FMLY for tours across the United Kingdom and Europe.[19]
Influences and style
[edit]Louis Sterling has stated that he is influenced by Flying Lotus, Dedekind Cut and Warp Records[20][21]. With formative years spent as a chorister at the Bath Abbey cathedral, critics have quoted the "natural resonance of these spaces to be imbued within his internal hearing", with some ambient works being "Reminiscent of artists such as William Basinski and Tim Hecker"[22].
