The March 2019 climate strike, also known as the Global Climate Strike for Future, was a series of international strikes and protests to demand action be taken to deal with climate change, which took place on 15 March 2019. This event is a part of the school strike for climate movement, inspired by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.[3][4] The Guardian reported that around 1.4 million people participated in the events,[1] while 350.org—an environmental organization that organised similar protests—claim that 1.6 million people participated.[2]
The strike was at that time, the largest climate strike so far in the movement.[5] Organisers reported that over 1.6 million people participated in the strike worldwide,[6] including 300,000 participants in Germany.[7] An estimated 150,000 protesters took part in Australian strikes,[8] an extra 50,000 people joined the British protests.[9] The strike was supported by thousands of scientists.[10]
Further strikes
[edit]The second climate strike held on 24 May 2019, during the 2019 European Parliament election. The strike began in Australia and New Zealand, and quickly spread over the world.[11][12] The third climate strike was held from 20 to 27 September 2019, days before the UN Youth Climate Summit and the UN Climate Action Summit. This strike was the largest strike in the world history, with over 4 million people participated in the strike worldwide on 20 September.[13] An addition 2 million people took part in the strike on 27 September.[14] The fourth climate strike was scheduled on 29 November, a few days before the UN Climate Change Conference.[15]
