Udmurt is a Permic Uralic language spoken by the Udmurt people in Udmurtia. It is co-official with Russian. It uses a Cyrillic alphabet with five unique characters, which are Ӝ/ӝ, Ӟ/ӟ, Ӥ/ӥ, Ӧ/ӧ, and Ӵ/ӵ. As part of the Permic grouping, it shares similar structures with Komi. Historically known as Votyak, it has borrowed vocabulary from Tatar and Russian. In 2010, there were about 324,000 speakers according to the Russian census. Ethnologue estimates 550,000 native speakers in the former Russian SFSR. This reflects a 41% decline in 21 years.
