Academy Awards Database nominee ID (P6150)

We have included the Emmys and the Grammys as award database identifiers already. Please include the Academy Awards as well. Thank you and kind regards, Spinster300 (talk) 15:54, 19 January 2025 (UTC).

National Library of Spain ID (P950)

National Library of Spain ID (P950) is not working. Example:
Old:

New:

Old: http://catalogo.bne.es/uhtbin/authoritybrowse.cgi?action=display&authority_id=$1
New: https://datos.bne.es/resource/$1

Grimes2 (talk) 13:17, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

@Tom.Reding: Another ping. I've restored this item, because it was archived. Please use the new url, because the old one is dysfunktional. Please add also Hessian Biography person (GND) ID (P13226) above. The pattern is available at sandbox.
Shouldn't the new format actually be https://catalogo.bne.es/discovery/authsearch?authorityQuery=$1&searchField=keyword&vid=34BNE_INST:CATALOGO ? Example. ArinArin (talk) 05:39, 2 March 2025 (UTC)
Done. I've used Grimes' link because there was no response to Arin's suggestion — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:31, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Proposing a new identifier

Additive version of whitelist?

Hello, by testing, it looks like application of, eg, |show=arts or |country=ja returns a reduced number of results from wikidata; there are number of wikidata properties that would be relevant for Japan-related pages, eg P4275, P12144, P12145, P4257, P9080 (with a couple more imminent, inc. P?????); there are thousands of pages for which these would be directly relevant, but they shouldn't clutter and make less efficient/more energy intensive the authority control for non-Japan-related pages; to have these added, without removal of other properties, would you populate the ja whitelist with the full authority control list, then add to this, or is there a way to add a smaller numer of ja-specific properties to the standard list (likely many of those at Template:Japan properties), via an additive equivalent to whitelist? I haven't raised it there yet, but would it be possible to run a bot to add this parameter to the authority control for all pages where the talk page is linked to Wikipedia:WikiProject Japan? Thank you, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 18:09, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

It is not possible to do this currently. Adding a new identifier will add it to all pages, unless there are restricting them with |show=. I suppose we could make a default list of identifiers, and then if you wanted to add to these you could use something like |show=default, JA. Or perhaps a new parameter like |show_also= — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:47, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
Thank you. |show_also= in particular sounds good to me, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 09:13, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
In that case, it might be clearer to rename "show" to "show_only". What should happen if "show_only" and "show_also" are used at the same time? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:05, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
As an initial step I have added a default set of properties to Module:Authority control/config/sandbox which consists of all the current properties. If you add any more to the sandbox, then you can test if a combination like |show=default, ja works as expected — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:37, 1 April 2025 (UTC)

Scopus

I started an article about Stuart Stanton (surgeon). Having added a pro forma {{authority control}}, I looked around for a way to link him and found his Scopus id. But I couldn't figure out how to add this to the template and so left it as a comment. I was pleased to see just now that Miraclepine has sorted this out and suppose they did so mainly on Wikidata. I didn't feel comfortable doing that so would be grateful to hear more about how this was done, please. Usually with other ids like VIAF, I add them to the template and then a bot or script moves the info to Wikidata. Is Scopus different? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Davidson (talkcontribs)

The template does not recognise any identifiers passed as parameters, everything comes from Wikidata. The best way to link a new article is to add it as a site link to the Wikidata item. You can also use the |qid= parameter to specify an item (but this will be ignored as soon as the article is linked) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:58, 10 June 2025 (UTC)
I found a discussion in 2023 which indicates that MSGJ has unilaterally removed local parameters from this template without consensus as there was opposition from editors such as Nikkimaria and Tom.Reding. I am opposed to this too. Please revert. Andrew🐉(talk) 22:10, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
I still support editors being able to add parameters here via the template, tracked to be transferred to Wikidata.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:08, 15 June 2025 (UTC)
The current code has been working well for nearly a year without any complaints. Any templates with added parameters are tracked via this category and I have been monitoring this category regularly, and transferring any identifiers to Wikidata as necessary. It has slowed to a trickle recently, and in most cases it is an article which has been copied from German Wikipedia (they don't seem to be using Wikidata there yet) and it just needs linking to the correct item with the |qid= parameter — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:36, 23 June 2025 (UTC)

SIK-ISEA

I think we need to update the pattern for SIKART person ID (P781). The regular expression is now ^(person|group|institution|work|document)-\d+$ and there are more than 1000 pages in the error category — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:07, 26 June 2025 (UTC)

It appears that the role account SIK-ISEA database team has been through the entire database changing the format of this property (example). This is quite disruptive and seems to have been done without any discussion. I have brought it up at Wikidata:Project chat — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:09, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
An update in the pattern as mentioned above so it would match with the regex at P781 would be appreciated, thanks.
As for your other points, see my message in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat#c-SIK-ISEA_database_team-20250626143300-Marsupium-20250626141900, copied below:
I had discussed this on a conference call with the Wikidata group of local libraries and GLAM institutions some time last year and also separately in the Wikidata Telegram channel in October 2024:
I had proposed the following options at https://t.me/c/1224298920/135813 and let people vote (my own vote is one of the "I just want to see the results"), below a copy from what you see at the link right now:
---
How to encourage the use of the "SIK-ISEA ID" identifier instead of "SIKART ID" in the future?
43% of votes: Rename the existing identifier and expand its scope, keep the old name as an alias
5% of votes: propose a new identified, mark P781 as deprecated, migrate everything to the new property
9% of votes: I'm undecided
43% of votes: I just want to see the results
---
Regarding the account name, you can read my name on my user page, I'm the only person editing from this account. I wanted to make my affiliation with the institution clear and had also made a statement regarding paid editing on my user page.
Regarding the changes in references, this is one of the next steps. As I mentioned this is work in progress which I started yesterday after seeing all the broken links for groups.
SIK-ISEA database team (talk) 14:59, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Perhaps conversation and documentation should continue on the talk page for this property at d:Property talk:P781. At a glance, it seems that we have a plan, a community conversation, and a consensus process in place, so that seems great. The current amount of documentation seems good to me. I would like anyone who probes a bit to be able to confirm that this discussion exists. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:39, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
"and a consensus process in place"—But no consensus. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:55, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
There are already replies to the orginal version of that comment, on Wikidata. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:56, 26 June 2025 (UTC)
Just a quick heads-up that I'll be rolling back the changes in the next hours and we'll discuss the way forward after that in https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Project_chat#SIK-ISEA_ID_(P781). So no pattern update needed yet.
I'll keep you posted when a change will become necessary to still work for persons and groups, it's possible that they will have separate identifiers in the future. PB (SIK-ISEA) (talk) 17:41, 28 June 2025 (UTC)

Is this prepared on the sandbox? If I remember rightly, despite the name of "arts", this whitelist was never particular associated with the arts — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:38, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
I may have misremembered that. Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 February 26#Template:ACArt in case you're interested in the background. It predates my involvement with this template — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:48, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
I've prepared Module:Authority control/config/sandbox, but there is not the desired result. I think Module:Authority control (arts) should be edited instead. This module is very complex, so I doubt its only for the purpose of a whitelist. Grimes2 17:21, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
Module:Authority control (arts) is unused. Your changes look correct to me — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:15, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
But the result doesn't fit. The Wikipedia article of Rembrandt has the template Authority control (arts). MoMA, Städel, Prado is missing. With |show=arts sandbox these IDs are available. There are about 20,000 articles with Authority control (arts) Grimes2 20:23, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
How does it not fit? In your sandbox example below, the MoMA, Prado, etc. are correctly showing — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:56, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
The problem is: The Wikipedia article Rembrandt has the template Authority control (arts). Grimes2 21:59, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
{{Authority control (arts)}} is exactly the same as {{Authority control|show=arts}}. It's just a wrapper — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:00, 16 July 2025 (UTC)
Why is the result different? Grimes2 22:01, 16 July 2025 (UTC)

Armenia and Belarus national library authorities

Not sure how to request this, but can we please make records from the national authority files of Armenia (P8833) and Belarus (P3390) appear in the Template:Authority control in Wikipedia articles? Is there a different page where I can request this?
Union Catalog of Armenian Libraries authority ID (P8833)

Both don't work. Grimes2 16:13, 18 July 2025 (UTC)
How so? For example, why couldn't the following two IDs (both in the Wikidata item) be added? Wikidata already creates working links to the authority records. Though for some reason, it's now having trouble with Armenia: "marc=1&" needs to be removed from the URLs Wikidata is creating.

Retire the pencil?

In articles such as Thomas A. Watson, the edit pencil really stands out. Could this template adopt the same style for edit links as the Navbox? Rather than V•T•E, it could use I•E (for Item and Edit), which would also help to differentiate it. ~ Boro (talk) 15:11, 6 August 2025 (UTC)

The difference is that V•T•E interacts with Wikipedia as usual, whereas the pencil is different and weird as a temporary measure to edit Wikidata. The editorial communities of Wikipedia and Wikidata continue to resist coordinating, with documentation in countless debates at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy).
The pencil is status quo so challenging to change because of high tension and strong feelings. I am in support of discussion about style changes but doing so would require social planning. One good way to plan is to have a group of about 5 people come to agreement, then co-present a discussion for broader change. I do not anticipate that there is a simpler way to get consensus.
Alternatively, I support anyone being bold and making changes, but if anyone protests, then we need to slow down. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:18, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
"really stands out"? It's a very small icon at the bottom of the article (and not even visible on mobile). And it's the same symbol used for Wikidata info in infoboxes as well. Fram (talk) 15:18, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
It does stand out in the context of the bottom of the article for desktop users (who still account for 50% of views). I'll try to read up on the debates to better understand the tension here. After that, I'm here to contribute ideas and to be part of the discussion. ~ Boro (talk) 15:32, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose E for edit doesn't make sense, because the items property is edited in Wikidata. The question is only pencil or I for item. The pencil is the better choice. Grimes2 15:32, 6 August 2025 (UTC)

Please note that the Integrated Authority File, or GND, provides data that are edited collectively by German, Austrian, and Swiss librarians. This is why it is not correct to indicate GND data as data from Germany, or from a national source only. Indeed, GND is an international authority file and should please be used as such. The German National Library only provides hosting under its domain. This is why I would like to ask if you please could modify the template and move GND to the international section. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 13:06, 15 September 2025 (UTC)

We could place Integrated Authority File under International or Germany/Austria/Switzerland (or German-speaking countries) under National. Grimes2 15:32, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
I'd prefer to place it under International as GND. Thanks. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
