- used for the purposes of commentary or criticism relating to the image of the currency itself
- where no free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information,
- on the English-language Wikipedia, hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation,
qualifies as fair use under the copyright law of the United States. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for more information.
- Please add a detailed non-free use rationale for each article the image is used in, which must also declare compliance with the other parts of the non-free content criteria, as well as the source of the work and copyright information.
- For example non-free use rationales, see Wikipedia:Use rationale examples.
- This tag should only be used for images of currency only. Do not use it for other purposes.
- Template:Non-free use rationale currency may be helpful for stating the rationale.

If the currency design shown is in fact public domain, please replace this tag with{{PD currency}}, if appropriate, and an appropriate copyright tag.This template should be applied to images of currency whose copyright status is unclear.
When uploading images of currency, editors should take care to understand the copyright status of the currency designs. Currency often falls into its own category for copyright, and the rules of thumb for evaluating public domain and fair use claims for artistic works may not apply.
Some jurisdictions that apply special copyright rules to currency include:
- Ireland: all currency designs are presumed to be under copyright and require a non-free use rationale.[1][2]
