Usage

In discussions of orthography, vertical lines || are sometimes used to denote glyphs (also called graphs), contrasted with the angle brackets ⟨ ⟩ used for graphemes. This is analogous to the brackets [ ] and slashes / / used by linguists to denote phones and phonemes respectively.
