617 – Li Yuan defeated a Sui army at the Battle of Huoyi, opening the path to his capture of the Chinese imperial capital Chang'an and the eventual establishment of the Tang dynasty.
1565 – St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously occupied settlement of European origin in the contiguous United States, was founded by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés.
1831 – William IV and Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen were crowned King and Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
1966 – The science fiction show Star Trek made its American premiere with "The Man Trap", launching a media franchise that has since created a cult phenomenon and has influenced the design of many current technologies.
2022 – Queen Elizabeth II (pictured) died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland; her eldest son Charles III acceded to the throne as King of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms.

2016 Launch of OSIRIS-REx

NASA launches OSIRIS-REx, its first asteroid sample return mission. The probe will visit 101955 Bennu and is expected to return with samples in 2023. This needs to be updated, obviously. —⁠71.105.243.101 (talk) 23:45, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal: Add Mahathir Mohamad's founding of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (2016)

Hi all, I would like to suggest adding an entry under September 8 for the following event:

2016 – Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad founded the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, PPBM), several months after resigning from the ruling United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

This event is notable because Mahathir is Malaysia’s longest-serving Prime Minister and one of the oldest elected national leaders in history. The founding of PPBM played a key role in the eventual defeat of the Barisan Nasional coalition in the 2018 general election.
