Talk:RAID controller
Appearance
I think it may be less common to use the term "disk array controller" to describe the adapter used to provide RAID for internal disks. Therefore I would support the merge if the ending title is "RAID controller" because I think it is common to use this term for either the internal RAID adapters or the ones embedded in an external disk array system. - Also I think of "disk array controller" more in terms of a disk array and "RAID controller" more in terms of and HBA based RAID system. --Pboyd04 22:57, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Are there actually RAID controllers that just use fibre channel to communicate with the drives? I thought most Fibre Channel systems were more of a SAN variety and therefore the Fibre Channel adapter in the server talked to a logical device not a physical device? --Pboyd04 01:24, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, many RAID controllers in external disk array systems use Fibre Channel on both the host interconnect and the disk drive interconnect. For example both Engenio and Clariion offer this type of connectivity. The host Fibre Channel is often of the optical variety, while the Fibre Channel to the disk drives is of the copper type. Another data point is to look at the Seagate web site and see that they offer Fibre Channel disk drives. TechPurism 03:37, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- I agree with the merger, as far as terminology I'm personally more familiar with "RAID Controller" but I could also see favor of "Disk Array controller" in that it is a more generic term. The above mention of SAN points out the need for a slightly more generic term, A SAN HBA itself is not a RAID controller (with the RAID hardware being on the device the HBA controls), but it is Disk-Array controller in, even if it controls the disks as a logical unit. --216.123.202.47 22:08, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
