Talk:Procedural synthesis
This is not new
[edit]Is using algorithms to create objects anything new? No, it is decades old. It seems everyone is fooled by marketing hype around PS3 and Xbox360. I've been using software like PoV-Ray to create geometry with algorthms for a very long time. It might be relatively novel to do it in real time in games, but please don't pretend it is something goundbreaking Microsoft or Sony just invented. It is old tech.
- I agree with you. To be honest anonymous poster, I don't see why using algos to build things is something to be differentiated. In the end they both produce assets so why bother with it? Here are some good reasons why this article should exist.
- Next-gen consoles have tons of processing power but it's expected their memory to be pretty limited. Procedural generation comes out to be very important once again as in the wheel of reincarnation. It's not marketing hype (well, there's quite a bit of hype but there's a real reason besides saying something cool).
- Your criticism is well accepted. There should be some background but personally I am not able to provide this documentation. If you can, put it in.
- Users should still be able to find something for that word.
I was working on the merge but I had a PC crash I've finally recovered. As soon as I finalize the page, I'll work to make sure your suggestions are considered. The new page will make pretty obvious that procedural synthesis/generation always existed because it will have a weak math background. This will take the tech back to its origin, centuries ago, with the greeks and their math (quadratics comes to mind). MaxDZ8 18:52, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
