"Open source"

This article repeatedly refers to MongoDB as "open source". Is that still true? In 2018 (according to the "MongoDB" article here), the license was changed from the GNU Affero General Public License to MongoDB's own "Server Side Public License".

They submitted this to the OSI but then withdrew it. Fedora and other distributions have removed MongoDB because it doesn't meet their standards for open source. Bruce Perens, one of the authors of the Open Source Definition (in the ZDNet article linked from the Wikipedia "MongoDB" page) said "Just don't call it Open Source". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.109.4.101 (talk) 15:32, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1. CIA backing concern section -> History section

Explanation: The current "CIA backing concern" section is very ambiguous and vague. It just says "This has been a source of concern in India." It also has a dedicated section contrary to WP:CRITS. My proposal is to remove the "CIA backing concern" section and replace it with the more specific description in the history section.

Just a brief note to say that (re: the first of the 2 proposed changes above) I feel that the sentence As of 2013, there is no known evidence the CIA actually has any influence over MongoDB is pointless as it is already 11 years out of date. Also, I do not believe that the opinions of the company's own employees have any bearing on whether or not there were concerns in India. Also I do not believe that the idea of "CIA backing concerns" is either very ambiguous or vague, as suggested by the COI editor above. It seems perfectly clear what is being stated by the section on "CIA backing concerns" and any suggestion to the contrary is spin pure and simple. Axad12 (talk) 21:51, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the existing section is somewhat violating WP:NPOV, and support the inclusion of the suggested replacement text. I don't think it's pointless adding something that is 11 years old, since it's still relevant as the outcome of the situation. I also agree with moving it into history per WP:CRIT unless anything additional to make it worthwhile and balanced for having it's own section is found. @Encoded: I do think the proposed changes to the "CIA backing concern" section are a clear improvement. WP:CRIT discourages dedicated controversy sections and the fact that there is no evidence of the allegation is relevant. The reason there isn't anything more recent is because the CIA investment arm sold their interest in MongoDB a long time ago, so it's ancient history now. However, I didn't want to get MongoDB involved in stirring up old conspiracy theories online. ToniBirdOne (talk) 19:09, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Software Section

This edit request by an editor with a conflict of interest has now been answered.

As stated previously, I work for MongoDB and have a WP:COI. While I understand Wikipedia is primarily interested in corporate history, as an encyclopedia, the current page doesn't have anything in the body of the page explaining what MongoDB does (see example). It seems incomplete to have a page about a company that doesn't explain what the company does. I'd like to propose a short, one-paragraph "Software" section be added (see draft below) using Wikipedia:Summary style.

Software

MongoDB is the fifth most popular database software.^[1]^[2] It focuses mostly on managing large databases of unstructured, "messy" data.^[3]^[4] It's typically used for mobile and web apps that commonly use unstructured databases.^[5] As of 2024, there were 50,000 MongoDB customers.^[5] MongoDB was originally best known as a NoSQL database product.^[6] The company released a database as-a-service product called Atlas in 2016^[7] that became 70 percent of MongoDB's revenue by 2024.^[5] Over time, MongoDB added analytics, transactional databases,^[8] encryption,^[9] vector databases,^[5] ACID, migration features, and other enterprise tools.^[10] Initially, the MongoDB software was free and open source^[7] under the AGPL license. MongoDB adopted an SSPL (server side public license) for future releases starting in 2018.^[5]^[11]

The article lead was short and outdated. It made more sense to me to expand the lead to a normal size rather than add a new section focusing on the product. In the lead, I tried to focus anything product-related on how it affects the company. Feel free to continue to suggest edits to the new updated lead -- let me know if I've missed anything important that is company-related (even including product features that impact the company), but beware I'm quite sensitive to anything that contains promotional language. Hi Michael. I thought WP:LEAD prescribes that the Lead summarize the body of the page, rather than having original content, whereas WP:SUMMARY suggests sub-pages be summarized on the main page.
