Life Simulator vs Instant Messenger
[edit source]Originally in the body, and currently on the sidebar, Miitomo was said to be a life simulator. I changed this to a messenger client, as that is what all the information I have seen is. Dissident93 reasonably asks what the difference is? Isn't Tomodachi Life a life simulator?
Well, yes, it is. And that's the difference to me. Tomodachi Life is a game where "Miis can then perform various actions, such as eating, trying on different outfits, falling in love with someone, and many leisure activities." That's a life simulator. Miitomo is a messaging app where Mii's prompt you to communicate with your friends. I haven't seen any indication that the Miis live a life. They are simply used as a vehicle to break the ice with your friends. You simply buy things with Platinum points and any free content. The Miis seem to only be used as a way of depicting communication and starting it with a friend's avatar. Rather than the app being about the Miis, the app is about texting.
However, I was hesitant to change the sidebar genre. But ultimately, this app is more iMessage/Hangouts than it is Tomodachi Life. More specifically, it's an icebreaker app. Unless there are features I haven't been made aware of yet. I don't usually edit video game sections. But I think mobile messaging app is a more accurate category.

Except for the fact that you can't convey any direct messages. The Miis are just blurting out random bits of information one of your friends put in. If I wanted to let my friends know that I had pizza for lunch there would be no way to control when, if ever, they would receive that information. "Messenger client" seems to be thre wrong classification for that. 204.124.67.250 (talk) 18:18, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
- So, would social networking app be better? Honestly, haven't use the app personally, but was just going off what sites like IGN and such called it. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:35, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Maybe I'm biased, seeing as how I live in Scandinavia, but
[edit source]...I'm really not a fan of calling it "worldwide" when it's only available in fifteen countries. Are there any alternative wordings we could use? "North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand"?--IDVtalk 08:19, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
- No, I actually feel the same way, I'm not particularly fond of how many editors/IPs use "worldwide" to basically refer to "NA and EU". I'm not sure if there's a consensus/guideline that is in effect allowing/encouraging this, if its just how people tend to do it, but I agree it could use some refinement across the project really... - I'm just going with the status quo that's been in use for years here. I don't have a problem with being more detailed, especially since this is more of an app than game anyway. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:14, 4 April 2016 (UTC)
It's a clever data mining app

New logo
[edit source]So, which version of the app logo should we use? The original logo or the newest one? Personally, I prefer the new one since it's well, the new one. The old one isn't being used anymore. Pinging RomaniPi and Dissident93 to this discussion. — Gestrid (talk) 20:50, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
- I say the one with the game's title in the logo, which is the original one. Or even better, just find and use the "Miitomo" font itself. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 22:12, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
- I think using just the font is good. Maybe have both App icons somewhere else on the page? RomaniPi (talk) 09:01, 11 November 2016 (UTC)
- Article is now using simply the font logo. We're not supposed to be using app logos in the infobox anyway, and I don't think they belong in the article itself either, unless specifically notable or something. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:13, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Citation needed
[edit source]This lacks a citation:
- In January 2018, Nintendo announced that the game's servers would be shut down in May of that year.
- It's sourced in the development section, see WP:CITELEAD. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 19:17, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
WOAH....
[edit source]Unsure how they think they can kick access out to Miitomo when it's still on Google Play and App Store. WikiWorldOne (talk) 20:34, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
- Because it wasn't popular? Then again, it's Nintendo, who stopped production of the NES Classic soon after they launched it. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 21:27, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, reviewing this. I review by making a list of issues as I read through, rather than using a template; I'll make any minor grammar edits myself.
"Performing various actions in the app would earn virtual coins"
- any examples?- The PCMag source mentions that coins can be earned by answering questions and completing daily missions; just added this. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
" to leverage the latter's keen understanding of mobile platforms"
- vaguely corporate speak, and "keen" is editorializing.- Changed to "Nintendo partnered with DeNA due to their experience in mobile platforms..." TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
"Miitomo first launched in Japan on March 17, 2016"
- repeats the previous paragraph. The second half of this sentence isn't as repetative but also reads oddly separated from the "released outside Japan on March 31" sentence. Should probably be combined with that one.- I think I've done as you suggested; let me know if it's still iffy. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
"Nintendo also stated that a browser-based Mii Maker tool would be created in late May"
- they stated it in late May, or it would be created in late May? Or created then and released in late May?- The source specifies that Nintendo made the announcement through a notification "sent out to Miitomo players on April 30". Nintendo stated, "...we are planning to add a feature in late May 2018 which will enable you to create and edit Mii characters for your Nintendo account via your web browser of choice." I've reworked the sentence accordingly. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- It's Nintendo, so probably not, but do we have any known reason/speculation why they shut it down?
- Ok, this is silly of me, but I just found a Nintendo Support page [1] that literally explains why they shut it down: "Q: Why are you terminating the Miitomo service at this time? A: We see this app as accomplishing a portion of our goal of getting Nintendo IP (in this case, Mii characters) into the hands of consumers across a variety of environments worldwide. At the same time, we've seen the number of ongoing users for the app decrease. We have decided to discontinue this service so that we can better optimize our operational resources across our entire smart device business." I've included this information in Shutdown and in the lead. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- I'm a little hesitant to see a college student newspaper used as a source (UWM Post)
- PresN I had checked their About Us page [2] and they have a suprisingly thorough editorial policy, at least to me. I do understand that college newspapers are generally esoteric to the college in question, but I'd appreciate if you could check it for yourself. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
"Writing for Digital Trends, Mike Epstein thought Miitmomo had very little inherent utility in everyday life"
- not sure this fits under "presentation" rather than "features"- Determining how to categorize these reviews was such a mess. I see what you're saying, so I've tacked the review to the end of the second paragraph (beginning with "
Opinions towards Miitomo's dedicated social features were also lukewarm.
") instead. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
- Determining how to categorize these reviews was such a mess. I see what you're saying, so I've tacked the review to the end of the second paragraph (beginning with "
- I don't really have much else on the prose, this is pretty tidy.
- Unused RS sources (you don't need to, but if you're already reaching for student newspapers): [3] (Quartz (publication)), [4] (New York (magazine)), there's a paywall but turning on reader view gets past it
- Thanks! I've added both. TheBrickGraphic (talk) 22:10, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
