Mak Yong Riau is actually from Mek Mulung in Kedah. In the beginning Mak Yong came from Kelantan then spread to the borders of Kedah, Perlis, Perak and Pattani. Resulting Mak Yong Kedah, Mak Yong Perlis and Mak Yong Pattani. In Kedah, a new variation was created from Mak Yong, which is Mek Mulung. The Kedah Sultanate spread the teachings of Mek Mulung and Mak Yong Kedah to Riau (Singapore, Bintan, Lingga & Batam).
