Preemptive note to trigger-happy revert puppies: this article was originally created by Fresheneesz to explain the term “HTTP accelerator” as used in Varnish (software) (see [1] and [2]). However, what the article actually describes is only one of many aspects of the functionality of HTTP accelerators, and at that one that Varnish did not offer at the time.
