I'm looking forward to a release of this. Wouter Lievens 16:13, 30 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Saying Java is one of the previous works of Steele is a bit deceptive. I understand that he only came on late in the project to smooth out the syntax and some semantics.

If one wants to include previous language work of GLS, one should replace Java by High Performance Fortran where he really influenced the language design a lot, not as in Java. Some ideas, like the parallel for loop, were visible there already. jschrod 10:32, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fortran

[edit]

I heard rumor that some of the people behind Fortran are working on Fortress. Is this correct? 75.67.167.110 18:12, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not as far as I know. Here's a list of the people in Sun's Programming Language Research Group. CWC 05:35, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Patents

[edit]

Take a look at Guy Steele's patents: http://research.sun.com/dmp/patents.php?uid=25706&show=all

Any new language designed by a company would probably have several patents covering aspects of it. Maybe it would be interesting to add a aragraph about Fortress related patents? This is very relevant to language implementors. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.37.187.41 (talk) 19:42, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Independent sources

[edit]

This article needs more sources external to the Project. Also, some of the external links should be made into references to support various statements in the article. However, I think it needs someone who knows more about the topic than I do. --Bduke (Discussion) 06:44, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The fortress project website appears defunct, and most of the links near the bottom of this page are dead. I have not been able to immediately find alternative links for these topics. Togr (talk) 09:22, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Some things just grow during incremental edits and sometimes get out of hand. The "External links" section, one of the optional appendices, was expanded to 15 entries. Three seems to be an acceptable number, and of course, everyone has their favorite to try to add for a fourth. Consensus needs to determine this. A tag indicates concerns.
However, none is needed for article promotion.
Some links may be included in WP:ELNO, or What Wikipedia is not (policy) such as WP:NOTREPOSITORY or WP:NOTGUIDE.
  • WP:ELDEAD may apply.
  • In some cases ELCITE applies: Do not use {{cite web}} or other citation templates in the External links section. Citation templates are permitted in the Further reading section. Others, listed below:
  • ELpoints #3) states: Links in the "External links" section should be kept to a minimum. A lack of external links or a small number of external links is not a reason to add external links.
  • LINKFARM states: There is nothing wrong with adding one or more useful content-relevant links to the external links section of an article; however, excessive lists can dwarf articles and detract from the purpose of Wikipedia. On articles about topics with many fansites, for example, including a link to one major fansite may be appropriate.
  • ELMIN: Minimize the number of links.
The External links guideline This page in a nutshell: External links in an article can be helpful to the reader, but they should be kept minimal, meritable, and directly relevant to the article. With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article.
Second paragraph, acceptable external links include those that contain further research that is accurate and on-topic, information that could not be added to the article for reasons such as copyright or amount of detail, or other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article for reasons unrelated to its accuracy.
    • Please also note:
  • WP:ELBURDEN: Disputed links should be excluded by default unless and until there is a consensus to include them. Please do not add back more links without consensus. Simple solution to facilitate career maintenance tag. Move links here for discussion.
