External links
[edit]For me the external links looked very much like advertisement because of all the buy options on this websites, so I removed them.
The text for the ecutesting for example says as you can see below testing & technical information but I could only find price lists and repairing options with telephone numbers of the garage at the first glance. Also www.qualitycustomparts.com doesn't sound like a link where you can get information about ECUs in general. A bit like writing an article about cows and posting the link to my favorit steak restaurant :-P

OBD not type of control unit
[edit]For my understanding On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) is not a type of control unit but a functionality which may be implemented within 194.15.135.12 (talk) 14:04, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
clarification on legallity of modifications
[edit]The article needs to clarify the distinction between the relatively novel legal clarifications related to the DRM issue and the longstanding "practical" legal restrictions to ECU modification that operate through the vehicle's licensing (ie modified vehicles are no longer "Street legal"). It might also be worth including that even before the DMCA DRM issue, certain professional licensing categories - notably those that deal with regulated vehicle inspection like for emissions testing - made it so that the actual act of modification would be legally prohibited for the license holder, subject to loss of their license and financial penalties. Or in other words: Emissions testing technicians who were "caught" modifying ECUs could lose their license. Historically, this would have been of appliability to prevent emissions testing technicians or their shops from offering to "pass" failing vehicles for a fee, achieved by modification or circumvention of the on vehicle electronics or the test-rig system.107.122.81.58 (talk) 10:04, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
