Page is now mixing projects
[edit]This page has become a mix of multiple projects:
- The original thing known as DSNP, with home now at GitHub.com/DSNP. I developed this in the mid-2000s.
- DSNP.org, developed completely separately.
They should be kept as separate pages in wikipedia. DNSP.org decided on their own to use the same name as the project that I originated. AdrianThurston (talk) 04:02, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- as in, you're the author of the articles original intentions? nover :3 16:34, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- I'm not the original author but it does look like this page was originally, explicitly about Adrian Thurston's project (see Special:PermanentLink/476545009) and has since drifted to be about DSNP.org. Not sure if it matters in practice because Thurston's DSNP probably doesn't meet notability guidelines, although DSNP.org might not meet notability guidelines either Viv Desjardin (talk) 04:42, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
New link to "IP address"
[edit]I've added this page to the "See also" section. Should I remove it? Starfall15 (talk) 15:22, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- doesn't seem to fit the article entirely, but i see no harm in keeping it here nover :3 16:32, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
3 Grammar Mistakes I Found.
[edit]The recent rewriter introduced three notable errors in the first article on the page. Each of these mistakes affects the overall clarity and accuracy of the content.
1. ...as the DSNP can facilitate increased use…
2. …nature and can help improve the user’s security and…
3. …social networking by allowing platform interoperability.
I hope this helps! Valentin Szilagyi (talk) 21:10, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

Dubious claims and very odd source
[edit]The current iteration of the article makes a number of claims that don't make a lot of sense for a protocol. For example, "Through the use of encryption and permission-based access systems, the DSNP enables users to determine who can view and interact with their data, supporting their ability to manage their digital presence." While this would make sense in the context of one platform in particular, encryption and permission management seem like more of an implementation detail that is dependent upon the user's configuration and the platforms they interact with, rather than a specific quality of the protocol in question. Is this actually true?
The mention of BlueSky and Mastodon also makes me suspicious. While the original author has a point in that they are relevant to decentralization overall, the source cited does not mention the DSNP at all, nor does the DSNP actually seem relevant to those specific platforms (I am not sure if they have a first-party implementation or access point for the protocol, as I haven't dug far enough to find out yet). Additionally, the source cited for this claim is a rather odd site naming itself only as "TechnoIogy News," with the only listed authors being "Technology." It almost seems like some kind of typo-squatting arrangement. When I looked at the privacy policy for the page, it redirected to the privacy policy for the newsletter / blogging platform beehiiv, which makes me doubt the credibility of this source even more. Is there a suitable replacement for this source, or should this entire statement / section be removed? Rose932 (talk) 03:57, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
- On your second point, I removed the whole section. It reads a lot like the writer misunderstood the subject of the article ("Distributed Social Networking Protocol" is a pretty awkward name, I almost feel like it should be called "Distributed Social Networking Protocol (Protocol)") or the fact that the name is so generic has just lead it to sort of drift in subject over time. - Makes sense to me! Rose932 (talk) 04:14, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
Reliable sources on DSNP
[edit]I get the feeling if this article ended up in WP:AfD it wouldn't survive. As it stands there's one source I'm at least a little confident could be considered a reliable source—namely, Matthew Nay's thesis. Theses often aren't reliable sources because they aren't usually secondary sources but having skimmed it it looks like it's more of a review. If Nay is associated with the project (I wasn't able to confirm) then this article might have no reliable sources... The other two are the DSNP website and an article from what appears to be an SEO spam blog.
In my own research I was able to find one additional article that discusses DSNP, although it's not the main subject so it probably doesn't qualify as substantial coverage [1]
I'd support merging this article with Frank McCourt (executive) in absence of more reliable sources. Viv Desjardin (talk) 04:33, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- If we're to trust Matthew Nay's LinkedIn profile (which is probably reasonably trustworthy), it doesn't look like Nay has ever worked for Frank McCourt and it seems like his research is not associated with the project. I feel reasonably confident that this could be considered a reliable source. We could get a lot out of it if someone's looking to expand this article, but I'd be very hesitant to spend a lot of time expanding this article without confirming it meets notability guidelines Viv Desjardin (talk) 22:07, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
