Talk:Chicken McNuggets problem
Appearance
First, it's called the McNugget number problem, not the Chicken McNuggets problem. Second, please discuss it on an appropriate talk page before reverting the result of an AfD which produced merge.
I'd reiterate the arguments made at that AfD, but that would be WP:SOAPboxing. — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 17:59, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- The Chicken McNuggets problem asks for the largest 'non-McNuggets number'. And yes, the article coin problem does list the McNuggets numbers, but lacks a lot of information that was displayed in Chicken McNuggets problem. I have no problem with a merge, but what you propose is not a merge, but a delete. Also, it would be more logical to leave a direct from the more generic article coin problem to this specific article Chicken McNuggets problem. I propose we ask for other opinions before implementing a delete/redirect. JocK 18:10, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- Well, the non-commutative section should go to the main article coin problem, and should not be in this one, if split out. In fact, there are a number of details here which should only be in the main article. However, WP:BRD is not WP:BRRRRRD. The status quo is the article as redirect, rather than the article as you've written it. — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 18:33, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- The status quo is not a redirect. Before constructing the article there was a paragraph on the specifics of the Chicken McNuggets problem in Coin problem. There was no redirect Chicken McNuggets problem --> Coin problem. Adhering to WP:BRD is fine as long as the revert R ≠ Redirect. Implementation of a redirect prevents discussion here.
- What I tried to achieve with this article is to make the generic Frobenius problem assessible to non-mathamaticians. I don't feel that a redirect from Chicken McNuggets problem to Coin problem would help a casual reader gaining understanding of the Frobenius numbers. Anyway, if there is a majority for a merger (either way), fine. JocK 18:56, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- The redirect was from McNugget number, not from this name, which I'd never heard of before, and is not indexed at MathWorld. I accept that you may not have located that, although http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Whatlinkshere/Coin_problem would easily have located it. Now that you know, please consider separately the question of what the name of an independant article should be and whether an such an article should exist. — Arthur Rubin | (talk) 19:05, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
- In line with the naming used here, here, here and here, I would advocate keeping the title Chicken McNuggets problem. On a merger: the article Chicken McNuggets problem has been expanded and is comparable in size to the article Coin problem where it is proposed to be merged into. A merger would create a too strong bias in this latter article to one specific case. Just as the article Theorem on friends and strangers has a place next to the more general article Ramsey's theorem, there is also a place for a didactical article on the Frobenius problem focussing on a specific example.
