New Redirects

[edit]

Hello, everyone! I've created two new redirect pages for this article: the search queries "Old Saybrook Bridge" and "Old Lyme Bridge" should now lead straight here. Give it a try! Nebulous2357 (talk) 04:38, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Drawbridge's overhead line

[edit]

I've been noticing through online videos that the overhead lines across the bridge are pulled away from the movable span prior to opening. How does that work? Are the lines de-energized when the drawbridge is raised? And when was the railroad electrified? Nebulous2357 (talk) 23:23, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Amtrak Old Saybrook–Old Lyme BridgeConnecticut River BridgeConnecticut River Bridge – Sources indicate this is clearly the common name, used overwhelming by the sources in the article: "The Connecticut River Bridge (Mile Post CT 106.89) a.k.a. the Old Saybrook Bridge" (from 2002), "Connecticut River Bridge Replacement Project Environmental Assessment", "The New Connecticut River Bridge", "The Connecticut River Bridge, also known as the Old Lyme Drawbridge", "However, some of the
approach spans for the Housatonic River bridge and the Connecticut River bridge"
"The proposed project includes construction to replace the existing Connecticut River Bridge between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, CT,", "select a contractor for the construction of a new Connecticut River Bridge", etc. Google Books results include North American Railroad Bridges (2008) Bridge Management 4 (2000) "Amtrak Old Saybrook–Old Lyme Bridge" is rarely used and the sources mentioning it may even be taking it from this article. [1] says "Amtrak will begin finding contractors in early 2023 for construction of a new Connecticut River Bridge...Also known as the Connecticut River Railroad Bridge or the Amtrak Old Saybrook-Old Lyme Bridge..." There are some sources that say "Old Saybrook-Old Lyme Bridge" but it seems overwhelming to me that despite this not being the only bridge on the Connecticut River, its official and common name is Connecticut River Bridge, it would be inappropriate not to title this that way, and we are certainly able to disambiguate. • I would be open to moving to Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge (the other Amtrak bridge crossing the Connecticut River is known as the Warehouse Point railroad bridge so no issue there) as a natural disambiguation but the proposed title of "Connecticut River Bridge" is obviously extremely ambiguous and should not be used, and I strongly oppose the article having that title. The I-95 bridge is right there and clearly a plausible target for that title, to say nothing of the dozens of other crossings of the river. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 23:07, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Trainsandotherthings is there any evidence that "Amtrak" is part of its formal name? If not, it seems a bad call to use it in the title of the article
Even there were a need for a parenthetical disambiguation in the title, there are other aspects that can be used as a disambiguation: such as location of the bridge, or the year it was built, or "NEC", or "Northeaasy Corridor", or the original railroad that built it. If there is need for disambiguation, "Amtrak" would be unhelpful if any similarly-named bridges have also had a connection to Amtrak at any time (i.e. have ever had services run over them by Amtrak), and given that Amtrak is a nationwide operator with a long history of routes and route changes that makes it often a less-specific disambiguation than other aspects of infrastructure SecretName101 (talk) 18:50, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If my suggestion is so horrible, then I'd be fine with some other disambiguator. I remain opposed to the title being Connecticut River Bridge with no form of distinguisher between this bridge and all the other ones that cross this river. Trainsandotherthings (talk) 22:23, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Connecticut River Bridge (Northeast Corridor) would be my preference since it is unambiguous. Connecticut River Bridge should redirect to the list of bridges; I would oppose it being the article title Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:36, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    • Its name is "Connecticut River Bridge" in the sources, which figure we're smart enough to know the difference between Connecticut River Bridge as a proper name with capital letters and a generic bridge on the Connecticut River. People likely aren't going to be searching for that specific name if they aren't looking for this specific bridge, and if they do end up here unintentionally, I added a hatnote; no other bridge has that name and that's what hatnotes are for! The I-95 bridge is not a plausble target, its name is Raymond E. Baldwin Bridge, not Connecticut River Bridge, but I've added a link to it in the lead should someone be looking for that. Connecticut River bridge could redirect to the list. But of these two alternatives, I would prefer Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge without the parenthetical. Reywas92Talk 00:01, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As written, Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge implies the existence of a proper name, which as you've indicated isn't the case. If it has to be disambiguated (it does) then it has to be done parenthetically. Mackensen (talk) 19:07, 17 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I agree that Connecticut River Bridge (Northeast Corridor) makes sense and is in line with the recent move of Susquehanna River Bridge (Northeast Corridor). Sticking "Amtrak" at the start creates a non-existent proper name. Mackensen (talk) 10:12, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I support Connecticut River Bridge (Northeast Corridor) for maximum clarity. I agree with the above comments; Amtrak isn't part of the bridge's proper name, so it's not proper to append it before the name of the bridge, even if to satisfy a WP:NATURALDIS concern. There are also valid concerns that there are multiple Connecticut River bridges and that Connecticut River Bridge should be a dab or redirected to a list of Connecticut River bridges.
