Early life

[edit]

Rashid was born in Sparkbrook, Birmingham to a working class British Mirpuri family originally from Bhimber, Pakistan; his grandfather settled in the area during the 1950s, having fought for the British Indian Army against Imperial Japan in Burma. While he excelled at school, his interest in scholastic pursuits first arose when he noticed his community being frequently approached by "Wahhabi missionaries", who interrogated them about their beliefs.[2][better source needed]

Studies

[edit]

He began his studies at Jamia Al-Karam in Birmingham, where he completed the Dars-i Nizami curriculum; after receiving his first Ijazah, he decided to further his studies in Damascus, at the Umayyad Mosque, among others.[3][better source needed]

Arrest in Medina

[edit]

He went on to briefly study in Mecca and Medina, but was arrested after a debate with local theologians for critiquing Wahhabi doctrine, while completing his Hajj; he went on to complete additional studies at Al-Azhar.[4]

Career

[edit]

He ultimately decided to start his teaching career in Moseley, Birmingham, at Gulzar-e-Habib Mosque, also known as South Birmingham Center Mosque, where he gives Islamic sermons and has taught various seminars.[5][6]

Bibliography

[edit]

Since beginning his teaching career, he has authored various books, most notably Islam answers Atheism, Navigating the Endtimes and Intellectual Intifada.[7][better source needed]

Views

[edit]

British Army

[edit]

In 2011, Rashid called for British Muslims to boycott the British Army over involvement in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, while asserting "if a foreign government invaded England tomorrow", Muslims would fight to defend the country.

"It's not that I hate English people, or English soldiers who have gone abroad, or that I don't feel for the mothers of these soldiers. But the fact is they should make conscientious decisions as well... we must only fight wars which are in our interest, and invading Iraq and then oppressing the Iraqi people and Afghani people, is not the English way."[4]

Elizabeth II

[edit]

Rashid has called Elizabeth II a "disgusting woman" for knighting author Salman Rushdie, following his publication of The Satanic Verses, deemed blasphemous by Muslims.[4]

LGBTQ education

[edit]

Rashid has faced backlash for his comments amid protests against LGBTQ sex education in Birmingham by Catholics and Muslims in 2019:[8]

What are the harms of [homosexual] relationships? Do they tell you that males that perform this action, will eventually have something known as the male Tampax? And some of them are unable to control their bowels, so that they wake up in the morning, and their bowels have been emptied on the bed [...] do they tell you this in school? These are additional things that should be taught in schools also, meaning if you attempt to carry out a Chinese Communist Mao Zedong-style brainwashing program, additional to this, they should teach them our counter-arguments.

Maccabi Tel Aviv

[edit]

Referring to supporters of Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv, Rashid said Muslims in Birmingham would "not show them mercy" during their 6th November Europa League visit to Aston Villa, suggesting they should debt trap the Israel Defense Force soldiers among them, amid controversy over the Gaza genocide:[9][10][11][12][13][14]

If you meet an IDF soldier, and you charge him interest, there is no riba, you can take from him – take, not give [...] that is the ruling.

Shadow Justice Secretary and Conservative Party MP Robert Jenrick called for Rashid to be banned from preaching over the remarks.[15][better source needed] Maccabi fans were later banned from attending, with West Midlands Police citing their role in the November 2024 Amsterdam riots.[16]
