Project MKHEXE is a 2025 American found footage horror film written and directed by Gerald Robert Waddell. It stars Ignacyo Matynia, Jordan Knapp, Will Jandro, Jennifer Lynn O'Hara, and Dwayne Tarver.

Plot

[edit]

Tim Wilson, an aspiring filmmaker, returns to his family home after the sudden suicide of his younger brother, Sean. During the funeral preparations, Tim discovers Sean's extensive collection of notes, VHS tapes, and digital recordings, all centered around a mysterious urban legend known as "Project MKHEXE." This project, a supposed government mind-control experiment, is said to induce horrific nightmares, violent outbursts, and complete mental breakdowns in its subjects.

As Tim delves deeper into Sean's research, he uncovers a series of disturbing events,

  • The Treehouse Discovery: Tim and Sean's friend, Nicole, find a hidden treehouse in the woods containing mutilated animal carcasses arranged in ritualistic patterns. The walls are covered with cryptic symbols and blood-stained notes, suggesting it was used for dark experiments.
  • The Mommy Blogger Tape: Among Sean's tapes is a video of a once-popular mommy blogger who, after exposure to MKHEXE, descends into madness. The footage shows her smearing blood on her face, speaking in tongues, and ultimately gouging out her own eyes on camera.
  • The Subway Incident: Tim uncovers a recording of a college student exploring an abandoned Chicago subway tunnel rumored to house MKHEXE labs. The footage ends abruptly as the student is attacked by an unseen force, with screams echoing and the camera capturing a fleeting glimpse of a grotesque, humanoid figure.

Tim's investigation is further complicated by the disappearance of digital files and physical evidence, as if someone or something is actively erasing traces of MKHEXE. As Tim's obsession grows, he begins experiencing hallucinations and nightmares similar to those described in Sean's notes. He sees shadowy figures lurking in the corners of his vision and hears whispers urging him to "join them."

Tim discovers a hidden chamber beneath the family home, filled with MKHEXE equipment and recordings of Sean undergoing experiments. The footage shows Sean being subjected to sensory deprivation, forced to watch disturbing imagery, and injected with unknown substances. In one particularly gruesome clip, Sean is seen tearing at his own flesh, screaming about "the hex inside."

Realizing the depth of the conspiracy and the extent of Sean's torment, Tim confronts Nicole, only to find her in a catatonic state, eyes rolled back and muttering incoherently. Suddenly, she attacks Tim with a broken glass shard, slashing his arm before collapsing.

The film ends with a montage of Tim's final recordings, showing him descending into madness. In the last scene, Tim is seen setting up a camera in the treehouse, his eyes vacant and a sinister smile on his face. As the screen fades to black, a distorted voice whispers, "What we fear, we create."
