Update TopColor documentation or fully depreciate

[edit]

I've just gone through and cleared out a good amount of articles from Category:Episode lists with row deviations. There previously were about 100 or so in there and what I removed were a lot of instances where the parameter was being used to no affect or no real purpose, and also removed largely on anime/manga episodes articles where it was to note a special (this being clear through other parameters). What's left in the cat, as I see it, is a lot of uses on Doctor Who related media pages to indicate "upcoming" releases (I don't think we should do this), and other instances on non-scripted shows to indicate winners etc. (I think this could be a valid use). After doing this clean up, I felt it was necessary to have a larger discussion about the parameter and if it even should still exist. See also Template_talk:Episode_list/Archive_5#TopColor for context which was linked in the category. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 20:36, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The 'upcoming' examples seem unnecessary to me, they already have a date column to cover that. The 'winners' examples feel like a more valid use of the param, giving a quick and easy visual aid, but having something only indicated by colours is an accessibility issue. - adamstom97 (talk) 11:42, 12 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've gotten distracted, but I think we should still adjust this documentation wording. I'll try to come up with a suggestion soon to get further input on. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 20:47, 12 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

TBA: To Be Announced

[edit]

Please update this template so that the tooltip properly explains that TBA stands for "To Be Announced" as currently the tooltip simply repeats the text "TBA" which is not informative and does not actually explain what TBA stands for. (Someone somewhere is a new reader, possibly even a reader with English as their second language, so acronyms and initialisms do need to be explained.) It may be helpful to look at Template:TBA or Template:TableTBA.) If in doubt please ask the people at WP:ACCESSIBILITY who know better than I do about accessibility and the needs of users with screen readers. -- 109.79.166.201 (talk) 09:39, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 28 May 2025

[edit]

On lines 300 and 425, change "prameter" to "parameter" so as to correct its spelling. ShoneBrooks (talk) 16:15, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting a new parameter for the literal translation of a native title

[edit]

Couldn't there be a new parameter for the literal translation of a native episode title? It could be named something like "NativeTitleLit". With the new parameter, the literal meaning of a native title could be indicated as well.

This is an example for the languages that use latin alphabet:

Italian: Avventura (lit.'Adventure')

And this is an example for the non-latin alphabet languages:

Transliteration: "Bōken" (Japanese: 冒険; lit.'Adventure')

In fact, I tried to use "AltTitle" for that, but it clashes with "TranslitTitle". --211.211.103.154 (talk) 08:54, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Could you not do this using |RAltTitle={{nbsp}}({{Literal translation|Adventure}}) ? It would provide
Transliteration: "Bōken" (Japanese: 冒険) (lit.'Adventure')
It's not identical in merging the brackets, but it's an already-doable format. -- Alex_21 TALK 09:53, 1 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I'll try that way. Thanks though. --211.211.103.154 (talk) 06:34, 7 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Exclusion for TBA with a note and other similar entries in air date

[edit]

After whittling down Category:Episode lists with unformatted air dates through my bot and some manual work, I've got it down to a remaining few that have some entries that I'm wondering how we account for in the |OriginalAirDate= param. I believe in the checking for the maintenance category, we make an exclusion for "Unaired" as text? However we do that, there are a few items that are similar in nature and although the list is pared down to just a few, I have seen other similar instances. Here are some examples based on what's there for invalid date entries in |OriginalAirDate=:

These seem to be what people generally do when there is a an episode that may not have aired on the primary outlet, but might have been released somewhere else (this seems to happen with Disney+ on a regular basis with early releases). So I guess my question/comment is can we do one of the following:

  1. Create an exclusion for the maintenance category to ignore these types of instances.
  2. Set/discuss some standard that provides clear documentation/guidance on not inputting things this way
  3. Or, ignore it and move on.

I hope a explained this well enough to make sense what I'm asking and suggesting. Certainly, if I'm murky on it, just ask me to rewrite or clarify. ButlerBlog (talk) 18:15, 18 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I think an exclusion should be made, because I think the use of citation tags or note tags to provide further information about a date is helpful. I don't see this being an improper formatting case. - Favre1fan93 (talk) 16:16, 19 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
At Topo that is a horrible note. So we have an actual air date, but we're sticking with a "TBA" because? Same with Pat. For "Unaired", I agree that we should add that as accepted text. Gonnym (talk) 08:57, 20 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think "Unaired" is already accepted (at least, it doesn't appear to affect inclusion in the main cat). In doing some further work to clean up the category, it does look like {{citation needed}} is accepted (in my original post, I thought it wasn't). ButlerBlog (talk) 14:25, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I notice that Template:Character list is misusing this template. It shouldn't use it at all. I'll try and take a look at it and erase this horrible misuse. Gonnym (talk) 14:40, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I did notice that as well (the Highlander characters article). ButlerBlog (talk) 15:01, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
