This is the general discussion forum for Meta (this wiki). Before you post a new comment please note the following:
  • You can comment here in any language.
  • This forum is primarily for discussion of Meta policies and guidelines, and other matters that affect more than one page of the wiki.
  • If your comment only relates to a single page, please post it on the corresponding discussion page (if necessary, you can provide a link and short description here).
  • For notices and discussions related to multilingualism and translation, see Meta:Babylon and its discussion page.
  • For information about how to indicate your language abilities on your user page ("Babel templates"), see User language.
  • To discuss Wikimedia in general, please use the Wikimedia Forum.
  • Consider whether your question or comment would be better addressed at one of the major Wikimedia "content projects" instead of here.

Proposal: Add a talk section to the Meta Wiki mobile view

[edit]

I am requesting that a link to the talk page be added to mobile view in Meta Wiki to ease navigation. I believe this change will be beneficial so that users can navigate better in mobile view. Interstellarity (talk) 15:27, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

  1. Support as proposer. Interstellarity (talk) 15:27, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
I couldn’t understand the proposal, are you talking about the ’Add topic' in talk page? 🪶-TΛNBIRUZZΛMΛN (💬) 15:57, 9 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Tanbiruzzaman I'm talking about a talk button on the content page. Interstellarity (talk) 00:09, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's weird that you cannot see the 'Discussion' button. 🪶-TΛNBIRUZZΛMΛN (💬) 02:53, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
In desktop view, yes, in mobile view, no. Interstellarity (talk) 11:03, 10 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Interstellarity, for some reason I can see a 'Discussion' button in mobile view. 🪶-TΛNBIRUZZΛMΛN (💬) 20:09, 13 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I can see it logged in on mobile, but not logged out. Interstellarity (talk) 22:03, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposal: replace se2011 templates

[edit]

I'm requesting that {{Se2011-closed}} and {{Se2011-2-closed}} be replaced with the more generic {{Steward election status}}. These 2 templates have long been out of date, and with limited language supports. No other parameters needs to be called. After the replacement, {{Se2011-closed}} and {{Se2011-2-closed}} can be deleted, as no other usages exist. 🐠 formerly U.T. 03:38, 27 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

[edit]

Hi all, are edits like this useful? https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Merchandise_giveaways%2FNominations%2FAkoopal&oldid=prev&diff=30168833 . I do not understand what it means. Regards, Ellywa (talk) 17:23, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi,
A malicious script did that, WMF is working on that situation. Wyslijp16 (talk) 17:28, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
thanks, I did not perform these edits today. Its not me. Ellywa (talk) 17:39, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
All know that. This a hacker attack. Vadikano (talk) 17:41, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Saying that it was a hacker attack is a bit misleading and can cause unnecessary anxiety. It's not like someone got into the systems and accounts were breached. It was a very smart programmed Javascript that put itself into the Meta-wide common.js after a WMF employee put a malicious script in their common.js. As far as the information that they have provided goes there were no actual leaks or what so ever. The Javascript just did it's thing with the accounts that were visiting Meta during the time that the Javascript was in the Meta common.js.
It's like kids who give their Discord password for free Roblux and say their Discord got "hacked". 😁 Elphie (they/them) (Talk) 19:55, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Let's not speculate on how and who @Elphie, I think these are all rumors. If needed WMF will put out a statement, and in all other cases I am sure it was a 'live and learn' situation for all. All the deleted pages have been restored, the edits were reverted, and it looks like everything is back to normal now. Ciell (talk) 20:25, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is not speculation, that's why I say it. WMF said this in the Wikimedia Community Discord.
"Hey all - as some of you have seen, we (WMF) were doing a security review of the behavior of user scripts, and unintentionally activated one that turned out to be malicious. That is what caused the page deletions you saw on the Meta log, which are getting cleaned up. We have no reason to believe any third-party entity was actively attacking us today, or that any permanent damage occurred or any breach of personal information.
We were doing this security review as part of an effort to limit the risks of exactly this kind of attack. The irony of us triggering this script while doing so is not lost on us, and we are sorry about the disruption. But the risks in this system are real. We are going to continue working on security protections for user scripts – in close consultation with the community, of course – to make this sort of thing much harder to happen in the future.". - Eric Mill (WMF) (link) -- Elphie (they/them) (Talk) 20:28, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why would I say something that would be speculation in an attempt to reduce the anxiety that might exist after someone says there was a "hacker attack" - which is clearly false? Lol, that doesn't make sense. I only provide information that was shared to the users 😅 Elphie (they/them) (Talk) 20:35, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
There has been a lot of 'information' shared in the past few hours, on Discord amongst other venue's, by a lot of people. You did not mention the platform your information came from, nor did you mention who you were paraphrasing. I was simply being careful. Ciell (talk) 20:40, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I respect your carefulness, now you know that I would not speculate on such things. As said it was a simple attempt to respond to speculations with facts. You should give me some credit though for the Discord kid example on how everything is called "hacked" these days 🤭. That word makes people panic, especially without any more information. By the way I've tried to find the same statement on Meta at the time that I wrote my response (since linking to a Discord message is a pain) so I would have linked that if I would have found it. 😊 Elphie (they/them) (Talk) 20:49, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ah, gotcha, thanks for sourcing the explanation. Eric Mill is in fact the project manager with WMF's Product Safety and Integrity, so they would know. Ciell (talk) 20:37, 5 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
