Mark Fell
Mark Fell (* 1966 in Rotherham)[1] ist ein britischer Musikproduzent und Klangkünstler. Er ist vor allem für seine minimalistische, algorithmisch erzeugte und an House und Techno angelehnte elektronische Musik sowie für seine Klanginstallationen bekannt.[2][3]
Leben und Werk
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Mark Fell wurde 1966 in Rotherham geboren.[1] Ohne formale musikalische Ausbildung gelangte er über ein Studium von Experimentalfilm und Videokunst zur computergestützten Klangerzeugung. Charakteristisch für seine Musik sind generative, meist in der Software Max/MSP programmierte Systeme sowie ungewöhnliche, vom Raster abweichende Rhythmen bei zugleich konventionellen Klängen.[4][5]
1998 gründete Fell mit Mat Steel das in Sheffield ansässige Duo snd, das seine minimalistischen Platten auf Labels wie Mille Plateaux und Raster-Noton veröffentlichte. Ab 2010 erschien eine Reihe von Soloalben bei Raster-Noton und Editions Mego. 2012 rief er das Projekt Sensate Focus ins Leben, mit dem er Einflüsse von House und Techno aufgriff.[4][2]
Daneben betreibt Fell eine Praxis als Klangkünstler mit Klanginstallationen sowie Licht- und Bewegtbildarbeiten, die unter anderem am Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe, an der Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Wien und in der Royal Festival Hall in London gezeigt wurden.[6] Für das Projekt Scale-Structure-Synthesis, das der molekularen Musik zugerechnet wird, übersetzte er 2012 mit dem Nanowissenschaftler Jonathan Howse die Bewegungen mikroskopischer Partikel in Klang.[7] 2016 bespielte er für die Art Sheffield einen leerstehenden Pub.[8][9]
Fell tritt zudem als Autor hervor und vertritt eine kritische Haltung gegenüber der musikalischen Notation.[10] 2021 erschien sein Buch Structure and Synthesis: The Anatomy of Practice bei Urbanomic. Daneben war er als Gastdozent tätig, unter anderem an der Hochschule für Musik der Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz.[11][12]
