Js13kGames

js13kGames (or JS13K) is a competition where browser games are made in 13 kilobytes or less using JavaScript and HTML5.[1][2][3] Software libraries are not allowed, but since 2017, there have been categories that do not include software frameworks in the size limit.[4][5][6][7][8] There is a different theme every year.[9] The winners get money, digital rewards, T-shirts, promotional items or other things.[10]
History
[change | change source]JS13K was started in 2012 and is run by Andrzej Mazur.[11][12][13] It happens from 13 August to 13 September every year.[14] In 2019, JS13K started working with Coil to add a category where participants make money,[15] which Grant for the Web has funded part of since 2020.[16]
Markus "Notch" Persson (the creator of Minecraft)[17] and Ricardo "Mrdoob" Cabello (the creator of Three.js), both notable game designers, have competed in JS13K.[18] Some games have been released on Steam (including Evil Glitch, which won in 2016)[19] or mentioned in online articles.[20]
JS13K began expanding in 2015. One thing they did was to add a panel of judges.[21] Dann Sullivan of Pocket Gamer, video game developer Christer Kaitilla and video game journalist Jupiter Hadley have been in all events.
In 2024, Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript, praised one of js13k's entries.[22]
