Jean Comaroff (2009)

Jean Comaroff (* 22. Juli 1946 in Edinburgh) ist eine US-amerikanische Ethnologin und Hochschullehrerin.

Leben und Wirken

Jean Comaroff, Tochter südafrikanischer Eltern, studierte Ethnologie zunächst an der University of Cape Town und erwarb dort 1966 den Bachelorgrad. Ihr Studium setzte sie dann an der London School of Economics fort und promovierte 1974 an dieser Hochschule zum Ph.D. Seit 1969 führte sie ethnologische Feldforschungen in Südafrika durch und zwar 1969/70, 1974/5 und von 1999 bis 2001. Von 1971 bis 1973 war sie zunächst Forschungsmitarbeiterin am University College of Swansea. Anschließend arbeitete sie als Hochschullehrerin an der University of Manchester, seit 1978 dann an der University of Chicago, zunächst als Assistenzprofessorin. Im Jahre 1984 wurde sie außerordentliche und 1987 ordentliche Professorin für Ethnologie. Seit 2012 lehrte sie an der Harvard University im Bereich „African and African-American Studies“. Gastprofessuren hatte sie an mehreren Universitäten in Südafrika, den USA, Israel und Europa inne. Seit 2004 ist sie außerdem Honorarprofessorin an der University of Cape Town. Sie gehört zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Fachgesellschaften an, so seit 1972 dem Royal Anthropological Institute und seit 1974 der American Anthropological Association. 1995 wurde Comaroff zum Mitglied der American Academy of Arts and Sciences gewählt.

Jean Comaroff gilt als Expertin vor allem auf dem Gebiet des Kolonialismus und dessen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung u. a. in Südafrika. Sie ist mit dem Ethnologen John L. Comaroff verheiratet, mit dem sie die meisten ihrer Bücher zusammen veröffentlicht hat.
