iOS 26 is the nineteenth and the next major release of Apple's iOS operating system for the iPhone. It was announced on June 9, 2025, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).[1] It is the direct successor to iOS 18; beginning with this version of iOS, all Apple operating systems will utilize unified version numbers based on their release year.[2]
System features
[edit]User interface
[edit]iOS 26 introduces a new unified design language across all Apple platforms known as Liquid Glass. Influenced by visionOS, the design updates the flat design scheme used since iOS 7 to utilize rounded, translucent elements with the "optical qualities of glass" (including refraction). Multiple apps (including the camera and Safari among others) have redesigned user interfaces to reflect the new design language.[3][4]
Artificial intelligence
[edit]iOS 26 introduces new artificial intelligence features; Apple Intelligence models were made more efficient and support additional languages.[5] It will support live translation of voice and text conversations using on-device models, while Genmoji can now be invoked to merge existing emojis together rather than needing to use a prompt.[6][4] The Shortcuts app will support the integration of AI actions.[6] Visual Intelligence and Image Playground will also feature additional ChatGPT integration.[6]
The new Foundation Models framework will allow on-device AI features to be integrated into third-party apps; Apple stated that a Swift app can implement the framework in as little as three lines of code.[5]
Messages
[edit]The Messages app will support adding backgrounds to conversations, polls, typing indicators for group chats, sending money through Apple Cash in group chats, and allowing unknown message screening.[4][7]
Games
[edit]A new Games app will aggregate games installed on the device and provide access to Apple Arcade, as well as challenges and leaderboards, provided through Game Center.[4][8]
Services
[edit]Apple Music
[edit]In iOS 26, Apple Music adds translation support to lyrics, pronunciation to lyrics, AutoMix, a feature that transitions one song to another, and the ability to use an iPhone as a karaoke microphone for Apple Music Sing on Apple TV.[7]
Apple Maps
[edit]In iOS 26, Apple Maps adds a visited places feature and can now adaptively adjust a user's preferred daily route.[7]
Apple Wallet
[edit]In iOS 26, Apple Wallet will be able to pay using installments or rewards points for in-store purchases. Apple Wallet also refreshes boarding passes by offering information such real-time updates on a flight, indoor airline navigation, Find My for locating and reporting missing bags, and more.[7]
AirPods
[edit]AirPods will offer studio-quality audio recording for content creation, and the ability to take pictures as well as starting and stopping video from the AirPods stem.[7]
Accessibility
[edit]iOS 26 includes new accessibility features, such as Accessibility Reader for systemwide narration, Braille Access, which allows connection to braille displays, as well as updates to Live Listen, Background Sounds, Personal Voice, and more.[7]
Supported devices
[edit]iOS 26 requires iPhones with an A13 Bionic SoC[a][9] or later, meaning it drops support for all iPhones with an A12 Bionic SoC.[b]
