Distinction between About/Help type articles in the Help & Project/WP namespaces

[edit]

This article seems a very appropriate place to explicitly enumerate what the distinction between the "about" type articles found the Help and Project namespaces is, i.e. what consensus and/or policies there are about this in terms of whether a particular guide/article belongs in one or the other, or, if both exist, what content does or does not belong in each.

As of this edit, the article reads:

The Help namespace (prefix Help:): contains pages which provide help in using Wikipedia and its software, both for users of the encyclopedia and for editors (e.g., Help:Footnotes). However the Wikipedia namespace also contains many help style pages that in some cases contain repeated information or more detailed information. For example, Wikipedia:Media help and Help:Files are help pages located in different prefixes covering some of the same information presented in differing levels of technical expertise.

And relevant section of the linked article at WP:Help namespace reads:

There is a large amount of overlap between the Help namespace (which provides mainly technical information) and the Wikipedia namespace (which provides mainly procedural information and interpretation). For this reason, redirects and hatnotes are often set up between these two namespaces. See Help:About help pages for more information. For a listing of how-to and information pages, see the help directory.

Neither of these are particularly clear, and the latter refers back here. I'm also not entirely convinced the rough descriptor given in the latter excerpt is even particularly accurate.

I've not made any edits on this because, frankly, I have no idea what the answer actually is. I assume there is a policy on this, somewhere? Or at least a more comprehensive discussion of this somewhere that enumerates a consensus of some kind --Tomatoswoop (talk) 13:22, 25 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
