"Happen to Me" is a song by American country music singer Russell Dickerson. It was released on March 10, 2025, as the second single from his fourth studio album Famous Back Home.[1] The song was written by Dickerson, Chris LaCorte, Jessie Jo Dillon and Chase McGill and produced by Dickerson, Josh Kerr and LaCorte.
Background and promotion
[edit]Russell Dickerson recorded the song in 2024, at the same time that he recorded his song "Bones". It references "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper, and although not an interpolation, credits the song's composer Robert Hazard as a songwriter. "Happen to Me" gained significant popularity after a dance to the song went viral on the video-sharing platform TikTok.[2] It was sent to country radio on March 10, 2025, being added to 66 stations.[1]
Composition
[edit]"Happen to Me" is a country pop song.[1][3][4] The lyrics follow a man meeting a woman who has recently broken up at the bar and spending a night out with her,[2][1][4] involving dancing, singing, conversing and drinking. He falls in love with the woman without her knowing and is determined to cherish every moment even if they may not see each other again.[4]
Music video
[edit]The music video for "Happen to Me" premiered on July 16, 2025, and was directed by Daniella Mason.[5]
Live performance
[edit]During the Detroit concert of Jonas20: Greetings from Your Hometown Tour on August 28, 2025, Jonas Brothers invited him to perform the song live on-stage, in which it led to a new studio version of the song that features the Jonas Brothers.[6][7]
