Futurex LP, commonly referred to as Futurex, is a privately held[1] American company that provides data encryption, key management, and cryptographic security solutions. Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Bulverde, Texas, the company develops hardware security modules (HSMs)[2], cloud-based encryption services, and key management platforms used by organizations in financial services, retail, and enterprise IT.
Futurex operates internationally and focuses on technologies that support data protection, secure transactions, and regulatory compliance.
History
[edit]Futurex was established in 1981 by a group of engineers focused on developing cryptographic solutions. Since its founding, the company has expanded its offerings to include enterprise encryption and key management solutions used by large organizations such as Discover, Copayment, and Miura Systems worldwide.
Products and Solutions
[edit]Hardware Security Modules (HSMs)
[edit]Futurex designs, engineers, and manufactures its HSMs in Texas, United States. The companies' HSMs are validated to FIPS 140-2 Level 3 and PCI HSM standards[3] and are designed to support both payment and general-purpose encryption, as well as key lifecycle management. These systems can be deployed on-premises, through VirtuCrypt, Futurex’s global cloud service, or in hybrid configurations.
As of March 2025, independent industry analysis has ranked Futurex among the top payment HSM vendors based on functionality and key capabilities[4][5]. The company’s HSMs implement NIST-approved post-quantum computing (PQC) algorithms[6][7][8] to address emerging cryptographic requirements associated with the development of quantum computing. They are recognized as the only HSM supporting PQC that has been PCI HSM validated[9][10].
CryptoHub
[edit]Launched in 2024[11], CryptoHub is an enterprise cryptographic platform developed by Futurex that integrates multiple encryption and key management functions within a single system. It incorporates HSMs validated to FIPS 140-2 Level 3[12] and PCI HSM[9] standards and can be deployed as an on-premises, virtual, or cloud.
The platform combines general-purpose and payment HSM functions with public key infrastructure (PKI), certificate authority (CA), cloud key management, and data protection. It provides configurable, on-demand modules that automate and simplify cryptographic operations, reducing the time required for deployment and updates[13].
VirtuCrypt
[edit]Futurex’s VirtuCrypt is a cloud-based cryptographic platform that provides encryption, key management, and payment security functions across the cloud. Initially released in 2015, the newest generation was released in 2020[14] and integrates with major public cloud providers, including AWS[15], Microsoft Azure[16], and Google Cloud[17].
VirtuCrypt offers payment HSMs that support transaction security[18], PIN translation, EMV key generation, message authentication, and mobile payment token issuance. The service includes remote key loading (RKL) and key management options, including Bring Your Own Key (BYOK), HSM-generated keys, and agent-assisted key loading, enabling organizations to maintain control over their cryptographic keys.[19]
VirtuCrypt supports vendor-neutral APIs, including PKCS #11, Java (JCE), OpenSSL, and Microsoft CNG, to facilitate integration with enterprise applications and SaaS systems[20][21]. VirtuCrypt also offers multitenancy, high availability, and redundancy features for reliable cryptographic operations[22][23][24].
Data Centers
[edit]Futurex operates a network of global data centers that provide infrastructure for cryptographic processing and key management services. These facilities are designed to support both cloud-based and hybrid deployments of HSMs. As of November 2025, Futurex has 16 global data centers[25] located in U.S. East, U.S. Central, U.S. West, Canada East, Canada West, Brazil (2 locations), Germany, the Netherlands, India West, India Central, Singapore, Australia (2 locations), Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. [26][27]
Industries Served
[edit]Futurex serves a variety of industries, with a focus on financial services, retail, healthcare, and government. The company’s solutions are designed to address the specific compliance and security needs of these industries, offering specialized cryptographic services such as tokenization, encryption, and secure key management for payment systems.[28] [29][26][30]
Partnerships
[edit]Futurex maintains partnerships with technology providers and financial institutions worldwide. The company collaborates with industry standards organizations, such as the PCI Security Standards council, where Futurex’s Chief Solutions Architect, David Close, serves on the board of advisors[31][32], and the Accredited Standards Committee X9 (ASC X9)[33], contributing to the development and evolution of cryptographic and payment security standards.
Certifications and Compliance
[edit]Futurex products are certified to meet industry standards, including FIPS 140-2 level 3[34], PCI DSS[35], PCI PIN, PCI HSM[36], and PCI P2PE[37]. These certifications indicate that the company’s solutions meet recognized requirements for cryptographic and data security within regulated industries.
Research and Innovation
[edit]In research and innovation, Futurex focuses on cryptographic security, including the development of quantum-resistant encryption algorithms[38][39][40], consolidation of cryptographic functions for payment processing[41], and advancements in cloud security[42]. The company publishes white papers and participates in industry events like RSA Conference (RSAC)[43] and Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX)[44] to present developments in its technology.
Recognition and Awards
[edit]Futurex has received multiple industry awards recognizing its encryption, key management, and cloud security solutions.
