Date of publication | 1972 |
Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | Cantus Arcticus |
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | This file heads the infobox. The image of the heading and subheadings of the score conveys key information about the work; the instruction to the orchestra to "Think of autumn and of Tchaikovsky" indicates the work's experimental nature; and the swooping melodic lines and changes of time-signature in the first seven bars demonstrate its delicacy and intricacy. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
An uncopyrighted image is not available and could not be created because the the score was copyrighted in 1972 (see footer of first page of Source, above). |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The image shows the first seven bars of the first movement of a three-movement musical work. The work has 1,972 bars, so this represents 0.35% of the whole. In terms of pages of sheet music, the score has 44 pages, and the first seven bars occupy about a fifth of a page, so on that basis, the image represents 0.45% of the whole. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
The use of the first seven bars will not infringe the commercial interest of the copyright holder, who wishes to sell the complete sheet music for the work. It may help in promoting it. |
Other information | (1) The image resolution purposely exceeds the 0.1 megapixels guideline in order to maintain the legibility of the textual and musical notation details referred to in "Purpose of use in this article" above. (2) The use of this image will not affect the value of the original sheet music, as it could not be used to prepare illegal copies of the full score (see "Minimal use" above) or an extract of meaningful length (it is only seven bars). |

Background
[edit]The image is clipped from the upper part of the third page of this source, which is a "promotional copy" of the sheet music for the Cantus Arcticus concerto by Einojuhani Rautavaara.
This source is linked from a page on the site of Music Finland. Music Finland is the national association of the Finnish music industry – musicians, composers, producers, recording & production companies, copyright managers, etc.). The page concerned – in Finnish – is here (scroll to the bottom for "PDF for promotional use" link to the work).
Proportion: The image shows the first seven bars of the first movement of a three-movement musical work. The work has 1,972 bars, so this represents 0.35% of the whole. In terms of pages of sheet music, the score has 44 pages, and the first seven bars occupy about a fifth of a page, so on that basis, the image represents 0.45% of the whole.
Competition with copyright holder's usage: Absent — no revelations, and the part does not prefigure or encapsulate the whole.
The resolution is slightly reduced, as this is a clip of a pdf of the original.
The image will be infobox art and illustrate the topic of the Cantus Arcticus article (under development from the current stub – see Talk page).
A text description is less adequate than text in conveying music. There is no "free" version of this sheet music.
