World Password Day is a global awareness day celebrated every year on the first Thursday in May. The purpose is to encourage people to periodically change their passwords, enhancing the security of their digitally stored information.
Importance
[edit]Passwords are commonly used to confirm a user's identity to give him access to information in the digital environment. The security of this method depends on the user keeping his password only known to himself. When the password is compromised, the protection can fail. World Password Day helps people remind the importance of secure passwords.
Origin
[edit]Password Day is a concept that author Mark Burnett coins in his book "Perfect Passwords".[1] published in 2006. Chapter 12 of that book is dedicated to the subject. He describes that he started celebrating password day after an investigation into a company showed that the quality of user passwords was the main cause of their poor network security. Mark uses password day to help him focus periodically on changing all of his passwords.
Since 2013[2] Intel Security is promoting World Password Day. The password awareness day is slowly gaining popularity.[3]
Practices
[edit]On World Password Day you should review all your password protected accounts, and replace the current passwords for new ones. It is good practice to have a unique password and username combination for every single account. To further increase protection, you are encouraged to use multi-factor authentication in combination with your passwords.

Developments
[edit]There are many threats to keeping passwords secure. With computing power ever increasing, brute-force attacks can try guessing your secret password faster. Phishing methods to try and trick you into giving your password, are becoming more convincing. And hackers are actively breaking into systems of service providers to steal stored passwords.
To replace the use of passwords, work is progressing towards the use of passkeys. With passkeys no private authentication information (such as the password itself) is transmitted between the user and the service provider. The authentication information that is transmitted is securely generated on the user side with the help of an authenticator, such as an app on your mobile device or a physical security key. These developments prompted the FIDO Alliance to propose that World Password Day should eventually be replaced by World Passkey Day[4]
