World Coding Day is a relatively new international observance established by UNESCO to promote digital literacy, inclusivity, and innovation through coding. World Coding Day is celebrated annually on October 29. This date was officially adopted by UNESCO in 2023, following a proposal from the United Arab Emirates. The selection of October 29 coincides with the anniversary of the launch of Dubai Internet City, symbolizing the UAE's commitment to digital transformation and education.[1]
UNESCO emphasizes that increasing diversity in tech can have significant economic benefits. For instance, doubling the proportion of women in tech could potentially add up to €600 billion to global GDP by 2027.[2]
UAE's Role
[edit]The United Arab Emirates played a significant role in the establishment of World Coding Day. On October 29, 2024, the UAE launched the "UAE Codes" initiative[3], aiming to:
