Woo Films, formerly known asMr Woo, is a mexican film production company founded in 2005..[1] It specializes in film, TV and theatre production. It has offices in Mexico City, Madrid and Los Angeles.[2]

In 2005 Woo Films, Mr Woo at that point in time, was created by a group of mexican filmmakers. During its first 14 years, Woo Films excelled by its narrative creativity in audiovisual advertising, short films and web series. Creating campaigns for companies such as Procter & Gamble, Casa Cuervo, Coca Cola and more.

In 2011 Mr Woo expanded to film production, creating Woo Films. Its first movie, Machete Language directed by Kyzza Terrazas [3], was awarded the Jury award at Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival, it also participated in the Venice Film Festival and the international competition of the Whistler Film Festival.

In 2012, Woo Films first worked with Natalia Beristáin on her first feature-length film, She Doesn’t Want to Sleep Alone, which had its world premiere in the Morelia International Film Festival [4], where it was awarded the prize for Best Feature.[5] The film was also present in the 2013 Ariel Awards given by the Mexican Academy of Film, winning the award for best actress. Further in time, Woo worked with Natalia again for her next two films, The Eternal Feminine[6] in 2017 and Noise in 2022. The Eternal Feminine had its Mexican premiere in the Morelia International Film Festival, where the director won her second award for Best Feature as well as the Audience Award, the film also won Best Actress in the 2018 Ariel Awards. .Noise also received the award for Spanish Cooperation in the San Sebastián International Film Festival.[7] Noise also participated in the Morelia International Film Festival and the Chicago International Film Festival. When it comes to exhibition, the film was a collaboration with Netflix, managing to become the logrando #1 Non-English movie worldwide on its premiere week.

The Good Girls and Buy Me a Gun were both produced in 2018.The Good Girls, directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella and starring Ilse Salas is an adaptation of the book written by Guadalupe Loaeza. It premiered at Toronto International Film Festival,[8] as well as Morelia Film Festival and won four Ariel Awards: Best Makeup, Best Costume Design, Best Original Music and Best Actress.[9]Buy Me a Gun, directed by Julio Hernández Cordón was selected for the Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight ,[10] it was also part of the official selection of San Sebastián International Film Festival y and Mar del Plata International Film Festival[11]. That same year, Woo Films had its second collaboration with director Kyzza Terrazas with his film Bayonet[12] ,starring Luis Gerardo Méndez. Which was part of Rome Film Festival official selection.[13]

Between 2019 and 2021, two movies were produced. Firstly, Modern Loves, by Matías Meyer starring Ludwika Paleta and Ilse Salas. Secondly, Anonymously Yours , is an adaptation of a the YA novel for Netflix directed by María Torres. It was nominated for the 2022 International Emmy Awardsl un the Live-Action movie category..[14]

In 2023, three movie premiered. Where the Tracks End, an adaptation directed by the talented mexican director Ernesto Contreras[15] . It won twice, best actress and best child actor, in the Mexican Film Journalists Cinema Excellence Awards, also known as Diosas de Plata. Hurricane Season[16], adaptation of the famous novel by Fernanda Melchor, directed by Elisa Miller[17], won three times in the 2024 Ariel Awards: Best adapted screenplay, best editing, and best makeup design. Eureka, directed by Lisandro Alonso premiered in the 76th Cannes Film Festival[18]

Down the Rabbit Hole, adapted from the book, directed by Manolo Caro for Netflix, was the first movie premiered in 2024 [19]. Followed by Dante & Soledad directed by Alexandra de la Mora, and starring Irene Azuela and José María Yazpik. Lastly, Pedro Páramo, adaptation of the famous novel by Juan Rulfo directed by Rodrigo Prieto ,who previously worked as director of photography alongside directors like Greta Gerwig, Alejandro González Iñarritu and Martin Scorsese. The film had its international premiere in Toronto International Film Festival[20] and its Mexican premiere in Morelia International Film Festival.

2025 brought the release of Lucca’s World in Netflix[21], directed by Mariana Chenillo; it adapted the book written by Bárbara Anderson. In 2024, Woo Films began a collaboration with Mexican stop-motion animation studio Cinema Fantasma[22]. This partnership’s first result came in 2025 with I Am Frankelda, the first mexican stop-motion feature-length film ever, which had its Mexican premiere in Guadalajara International Film Festival and its international premiere in Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Noc Noc Cinema

Alongside director Manolo Caro a division was created within Woo Films to focus solely on his projects, Noc Noc Cinema.[24] These films have had constant success in the Mexican box office as well as streaming services. Among its biggest projects are Elvira I Will Give You My Life But I'm Using It[25], Tales of an Immoral Couple[26] and Perfect Strangers[27] .

In 2018, a partnership was struck with Netflix, from which emerged 5 TV Shows, The House of Flowers (2018-2020)[28], Someone Has to Die (2020),[29]Once Upon a time…Happily Never After (2022), Holy Family (2022-2023) and Snakes and Ladders, which premiered in 2025.

Woo Series

In 2018 Woo Films worked on its first TV Series The House of Flowers, created by Manolo Caro, who, as already mentioned with Noc Noc Cinema, collaborated with Netflix to make 5 TV projects.

In 2022, Woo Series joined the production of the show Ana, created by Marcelo Tobar and Ana de la Reguera and starring Ana de la Reguera, for its second and third season. That same year, they produced a remake of the acclaimed hit show Rebelde, directed by Santiago Limón; which was made in collaboration with Netflix and had 2 seasons. Among its main cast are Azul Guaita, Alejandro Puente, Andrea Chaparro, Lizeth Selene and Franco Masini. In 2023, they released Thursday’s Widows, which adapted the book by Claudia Piñeiro. The series was created by Gibrán Portela and directed by Humberto Hinojosa Ozcáriz. Starring Irene Azuela, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Sofía Sisniega, Mayra Hermosillo, Juan Pablo Medina and Omar Chaparro.[30]

2025 brought the release of the aforementioned Snakes and Ladders, as well as two more series. Prison Cell 211 is a new adaptation of the novel by Francisco Pérez Gandul, and starredDiego Calva. The limited series managed to be in the Netflix top 10 series in 53 countries and reached #1 in 13 territories, including Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela, among others. [31]. Woo’s most recent show, The Gringo Hunters is a joint venture with Netflix[32] and is based upon a true story [33].

Woo Theater

In 2010 Woo Films delved into the world of theater, thus creating Woo Theater. Its first play was It’s Never Too Late to Learn French, directed by Manolo Caro and starring Iván Sánchez (actor), Sandra Echeverría, Mariana Treviño, Cecilia Toussaint and Leonardo de Lozanne. Furthermore, in 2021, they adapted the play The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell,[34]it was directed and translated by Angélica Rogel. The cast was comprised of Mauricio Isaac, Adriana Llabrés, Mauro Sánchez Navarro and Nacho Tahhan. The third production, How I Learned to Drive,premiered in 2024 and was once again directed and translated by Angélica Rogel. The collaboration between Woo Theater and the director carried on with their most recent play, Blood Wedding{Cite web|url=https://mexiconewsdaily.com/event/bodas-de-sangre-9/%7Ctitle=Bodas de Sangre}} </ref> ,which adapted the namesake text byFederico García Lorca.
