Victor Chi Wai Or (born October 19, 1951), professionally known by his pen name, Weide, is a Hong Kong-born literary author and retired librarian. He is renowned for his contributions to literature, with works featured in various publications and platforms.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Weide was born and raised in Hong Kong, where he spent his formative years. He attended Wah Yan College, a prestigious secondary school for boys in Hong Kong, where he developed a keen interest in literature and writing. After completing his secondary education, he ventured into the workforce before pursuing higher education opportunities in the United States.
In 1984, Weide relocated to the United States to further his education. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1989, followed by a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the same institution in 1994.
Writing Career
[edit]Weide’s literary journey began in the 1970s when he started writing novels, which were published in Thumb Weekly. He also served as the editor of the Shuhua section of the magazine. During the early 1980s, Weide worked as a columnist for publications such as Hong Kong Times and Outsider before moving to the United States to pursue his academic endeavors.
Throughout his career, Weide’s writings have been featured in a variety of publications, including the Hong Kong Economic Journal, Apple Daily, and the Hong Kong Film Archive series. In recent years, his works have been prominently showcased in publications such as Hong Kong Literature, City Literature and Art, Taiwan Literary Monthly, and Biezi Blog. He has been an active member of the Hong Kong Big Thumb writers’ group, contributing significantly to their literary endeavors.
Librarian Services
[edit]In addition to his writing career, Weide served as a Librarian II at Surrey Public Library and later at Vancouver Public Library until his retirement in January 2023. His dedication to library services contributed to fostering a love for literature and learning within the community.
